chapter 8
For several weeks in a row, whenever I didn’t have class, I would accompany Song Yan to his lectures, then rush back to my own department for my own courses.
But I disliked Tuesdays the most.
Because Song Yan had a class at the South Campus, while my afternoon class was at the Main Campus. The two campuses were a bit far apart, which meant I didn’t have time for lunch at noon and had to attend class on an empty stomach.
Sitting in the classroom, my stomach couldn’t help but rumble.
I silently lamented that I’d become spoiled after just a few good days.
I grew up without parents, relying on government policies, subsidies, tuition waivers, and constant part-time jobs to pull myself into a university classroom.
There weren’t many options in my life; money was always the top priority.
Almost all my extracurricular time in college was spent either working part-time or on my way to a part-time job. I simply had no time to think about things like dating.
That’s how I ended up with the nickname “Ice Beauty.”
Actually, I have a pretty good personality-I just never have time to show it to anyone.
“Hello, may I sit here?”
A gentle voice floated down from above, interrupting my deep thoughts.
It was actually the Senior I’d mistaken for my Sponsor that day-Jiang Yifan.
“Of course, Senior.” I blushed and scooted over to make room.
That morning, I’d called him “husband” in front of so many people, then ran off without explaining. It must have been embarrassing for him.
Thinking of this, I took the initiative to apologize, “Sorry, Senior, I mistook you for someone else that morning. I really didn’t mean it.”
“It’s fine. I’m not here because of that,” Jiang Yifan sat down beside me. “I just happened to be free today, so I thought I’d join your class to review.”
He hesitated for a moment, then continued, “But, why would a junior even mistake her own Boyfriend? Are you two in an online relationship?”
I blurted out a random excuse: “No, we fell in love at first sight, felt we were destined for each other, and started dating instantly. But the first glance was too brief-after a night’s sleep, I couldn’t quite recognize him.”
I couldn’t possibly tell him that my relationship with Song Yan was based on money.
“I see.” Jiang Yifan turned to look at me, his dark eyes fixed on mine. “That’s a shame. If you’d seen me earlier, maybe you’d have fallen in love at first sight with my face instead.”
“Huh?” My mind went blank for a moment.
I’d seen Jiang Yifan many times before. Whenever there was a student representative speech or our department participated in major competitions, he was almost always present.
But I’d never really interacted with him, nor expected that he’d know me-the always hurried part-timer.
“I remember you’ve always been the type who doesn’t date. Two or three of my classmates confessed to you and were all rejected. I thought you were focused on your studies, but it turns out you just hadn’t met someone you liked enough.”
“Yeah, hahaha.”
I nodded on the surface, but inside I thought, it’s not about liking someone enough-it’s about meeting someone with enough money.
After that, Jiang Yifan didn’t chat with me anymore. He put on a pair of gold-rimmed glasses and listened intently to the lecture. Occasionally, when he saw me looking confused, he’d explain things to me.
I have to admit, Jiang Yifan’s foundation was solid enough to represent our department in competitions, and his explanations were clear and easy to understand.
I was so absorbed that I didn’t even notice when class ended.
Until Song Yan’s sour voice interrupted our little study session.
“Baby, did you mistake your husband again?”
Jiang Yifan lowered his gaze to his textbook, adjusting his glasses. “No, I was just helping the junior with some problems.”
“Really?” Song Yan curled his lips, but there was no smile in his eyes. “Then you can listen next time. I brought you lunch.”
Only then did I notice the food bag dangling from Song Yan’s fingertips.
“Thank you for today, Senior. I’ll be going now.”
Jiang Yifan raised his brows with a charming smile. “See you next time, junior.”
