chapter 3
Back at the dorm, I couldn’t wait to quit my tutoring job.
Then I started searching on Baidu: “How to prevent scams.”
I scrolled through page after page, but couldn’t find this kind of scam anywhere.
I went back to the main page, checked my balance again, and looked at the bank card in my hand. Suddenly, it hit me-he never told me the password!
I opened the chat with the guy. His Moments were only visible for three days, his profile picture was just a black square, and his nickname was blank.
I stared at that patch of black, feeling stuck again.
I didn’t even know the guy’s name.
After thinking it over, I thickened my skin and typed, “Hi, Boyfriend.”
Half an hour later, he finally replied.
“What.”
I replied instantly.
“Um… I don’t think you ever told me the bank card password.”
Another half hour passed before he sent over a string of numbers.
“001223”
Right after that, he sent a four-second voice message filled with deafening music and noisy chatter.
“That’s my birthday. Remember it. I’ll quiz you later.”
I typed, “Not only will I remember it, I’ll engrave it into my DNA.”
But after thinking about it, I deleted that and replied, “Got it,” adding a cute cat emoji I hadn’t used in ages.
He didn’t reply again, so I just went out in the dark to the campus bank’s self-service deposit machine. After confirming the balance of four hundred thousand, I finally returned to the dorm satisfied.
Took a shower, went to sleep.
