Deputy Chief Chen led Zhao Kuo and Xu Lei into the lobby, where a woman in a black business suit was waiting. She looked to be in her late twenties, tall and poised, with the air of someone accustomed to getting things done.
“Hello, Deputy Chief Chen. I’m Lin Wei, an attorney with Junda Law Firm.”
“I’ve been retained to secure Mr. Qin Dong’s release on bail.”
Chen and Zhao Kuo both stiffened.
Junda Law Firm? It was the most prestigious firm in Nanjiang City, and its lawyers were all formidable litigators. Its fees were astronomical, and even people who could afford them often couldn’t get an appointment.
Yet one of its attorneys had come to the police station in person to get an ordinary university student out on bail?
Chen swallowed and put on a smile. “Of course, Ms. Lin. I’ve heard so much about you. Since your authorization and paperwork are in order, there’s no problem. I’ll have someone process his release immediately.”
Zhao Kuo grew anxious. “Uncle Chen, you can’t let Qin Dong go! Look what he did to me. You have to lock him up—”
“Shut up!”
Chen glared at him and hissed, “Do you think you can afford to cross Junda? If you want to get yourself killed, leave me out of it!”
Zhao Kuo fell silent, his face dark.
Throughout the exchange, Lin Wei remained expressionless. She didn’t even spare him a glance.
A few minutes later, the interrogation-room door opened. The young officer who had tried to intimidate Qin Dong by slamming the table looked awkward.
“Qin Dong, you can go. Someone’s arranged your release.”
Qin Dong was taken aback, but he stood and followed him out. In the lobby, he immediately spotted the capable-looking Lin Wei, with Zhao Kuo and Xu Lei standing nearby, their faces livid.
“Mr. Qin, I’m Lin Wei, your attorney. The paperwork is complete. Please come with me.”
She nodded to him and headed for the exit. Qin Dong had never met her and was utterly confused, but he hurried after her.
Outside the station, Lin Wei was about to drive away when he called out, “Wait, Ms. Lin!”
“Thank you for getting me out. May I ask who hired you?”
She looked back at him, an unreadable expression flickering in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Qin. At my employer’s request and under our firm’s confidentiality agreement, I can’t disclose any personal information about the client.”
“But shouldn’t I at least know who to thank?”
“My assignment was to secure your release. I don’t know anything else. If any legal issues arise later, I’ll contact you. Goodbye.”
With that, Lin Wei drove away, leaving Qin Dong standing by the road in bewilderment.
…
Back at the apartment, Qin Dong went into his bedroom and found a dragon-shaped jade pendant. His grandfather had left it to him before he died, with strict instructions to take good care of it.
Wondering whether the Sacred Dragon Physique his grandfather had spoken of had truly awakened, Qin Dong picked up the pendant and examined it.
Without warning, a beam of white light shot from the jade and entered his eyes. He hurriedly rubbed them.
At the same moment, an aged yet commanding voice rang out in his mind.
“Yin and yang have joined. The shackles are broken. The Sacred Dragon Physique is awakened!”
“I am Qin Zhantian, an ancestor of the Qin family. I bestow upon you the supreme cultivation art, the Flower-Transference Manual!”
As the voice faded, a vast flood of knowledge appeared in Qin Dong’s mind: cultivation methods, medical teachings, the qi-reading technique, the arts of the bedchamber… It seemed to contain everything.
At its heart was a cultivation art called the Flower-Transference Manual.
Qin Dong’s expression grew strange. According to the manual, the Sacred Dragon Physique embodied the most potent and forceful yang energy in the world.
But dragons were said to be lustful by nature. To cultivate the art—or simply stay alive without being overwhelmed by yang energy—he would have to find exceptional women with various special physiques and unite his yin and yang with theirs.
Doing so would temper the violent yang energy inside him and send his cultivation soaring.
“Isn’t this just a dual-cultivation technique?”
“Our ancestor really knew how to have fun…”
Qin Dong didn’t know what to make of it.
Just then, his phone rang. It was his store manager, Yang Wei.
The moment Qin Dong answered, Yang Wei launched into a tirade.
“Qin Dong, what the hell are you playing at? You’ve been absent all morning without a word, and you won’t answer your phone. Do you still want this job? Get your ass over here in ten minutes!”
“Sorry, Manager Yang. I’ll be right there.”
Qin Dong’s family wasn’t well off. His parents were both low-paid workers, and ever since he got into university, he had earned his own tuition and living expenses through part-time jobs. He had never asked them for a penny.
Half a month ago, he’d found part-time sales work at a secondhand-property agency near campus. The base salary was only eighteen hundred yuan, but the hours were relatively flexible.
More than twenty minutes later, he arrived at the agency, Anjia Real Estate.
The moment he entered, Yang Wei stormed over and pointed a finger in his face.
“You’ve got some nerve, skipping work without asking for leave! Do you think you own this place? You can come and go whenever you feel like it? I’m docking your two-hundred-yuan attendance bonus!”
In the past, Qin Dong might have tried to explain. Now he couldn’t be bothered wasting his breath on the man.
Yang Wei was a sleaze. Once, he’d tried to molest a female intern in the company restroom, and Qin Dong had stopped him just in time. Ever since, Yang Wei had held a grudge and looked for ways to make his life difficult.
What a spineless loser, Yang Wei thought. He won’t even talk back when I yell at him.
Aloud, he said, “I left my car keys in the third-floor conference room. Go get them for me.”
Qin Dong nodded and headed upstairs, oblivious to the malicious look that flashed across Yang Wei’s face.
At the conference room, he pushed the door open and froze.
The company’s owner, Zheng Youwei, was meeting with a female client, his face full of fawning smiles. Qin Dong had interrupted him mid-speech, and Zheng’s expression instantly darkened.
“Who told you to come in? Can’t you see I’m with a client?”
“Get out!”
Qin Dong’s face changed. He realized at once that Yang Wei had set him up.
“I’m sorry, boss. I’m sorry. I’m leaving.”
Flustered, he turned to go and close the door behind him. Then a voice rang out, leaving no room for argument.
“Let him stay.”
The client slowly raised her head and looked at him. Their eyes met, and Qin Dong went still.
Ye Junyao!
What was she doing here?
