Chapter 5
I couldn’t help but furrow my brows.
Who was the reckless fool behind this?
My lord had said: Pei Su must not be assassinated, because if anything went wrong, he would take the blame.
This was definitely another prince’s residence trying to frame my lord.
But in this situation, I couldn’t reveal my martial skills, or my surveillance mission would fail.
I fell into deep thought.
A shadow on the eaves bent his bow and nocked an arrow.
Before I could think further, Pei Su had already shielded me behind him, pressing my head down with his hand.
“Yuniang,” he said softly, “in a moment, I’ll go out first. They’ll follow me. You just stay here and don’t move, understand?”
Pei Su’s breath brushed past my ear, tickling slightly.
Pressed down uncomfortably, I instinctively raised my head, my lips brushing against his chin.
He instantly lost his composure.
“F-forgive me…”
A new arrow whistled through the air. In that split second, I resigned myself and shoved Pei Su aside, taking the arrow myself.
A few drops of blood splattered onto the ground, searing pain radiating from my back.
Pei Su’s eyes filled with despair.
The figure on the eaves slipped away without a sound.
Pei Su rushed over, gripping my hand tightly, his eyes red and on the verge of tears.
“Yuniang, wait here for me. I’ll go get help, I’ll find someone to save you…”
I said nothing, and he ran off.
I hissed, pulled the arrow out of my own back.
What kind of Shadow Guard goes on a mission without wearing Soft Armor?
Are they idiots?
By the time Pei Su returned with people, I had already nonchalantly taken off my Soft Armor and tossed it into a corner of the bushes.
He stared at my calm demeanor, tears pooled in his eyes, refusing to fall.
“Yuniang, you… you’re alright?”
“I’m fine.”
He took my hand, examining it thoroughly, up and down.
The others nearby couldn’t bear to watch.
I said, “If you’re alright too, then let me go. I need to get home and prepare for tomorrow’s pancake sales.”
He choked up, his eyes reddening like a rabbit’s, his tone uncharacteristically firm.
“No. You’re my savior. For the next few days, you must rest at Pei Mansion.”
Resting at Pei Mansion.
The attendants around him looked stunned and tried to persuade him.
“Sir, this isn’t proper…”
“Say no more!” Pei Su fixed his gaze on me. “I trust her.”
My eyes grew hot, and tears fell with a “plop.”
Pei Su was startled by my tears, then reached out and gently rubbed my head.
“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.”
I cried my heart out.
This meant, from now on, I could watch Pei Su without restraint.
My lord, your subordinate has succeeded.
