His culinary skills were quite impressive; he could prepare both Western cuisine and Japanese dishes.
When I got home, I noticed that the ring I had returned to him earlier in the day was still sitting on the dining table. I only glanced at it briefly.
That night, I slept in a different bedroom.
I was awakened by a faint rustling sound. Opening my eyes, I saw Chen Jianjin lying on the other side of the bed, holding a pillow.
Suddenly, his phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and then walked out to the balcony.
Even the smallest sounds are amplified infinitely in the stillness of the night.
I could only hear the person on the other end sobbing, saying:
“Jianjin, I regret it.
“Can you… come and take me away?”
His tone was soft, his thin lips parting slightly, but he remained silent for a long time.
It wasn’t until I heard the sound of glass shattering on the other end that he finally spoke, after a pause:
“I’ll come over now.”
I kept my eyes tightly shut, pretending to be asleep.
It wasn’t until I heard him sigh softly, brush a hand over the top of my head, and leave the room that I opened my eyes.
The person on the other end of the call must have been Zhou Sining.
A year ago, when I had an accident and was injured, it only took one phone call from her to make Chen Jianjin leave me behind.
