Summary
After witnessing her parents’ apparent suicides and the collapse of the Shu family, seventeen-year-old Shu Wan is taken to Beicheng by Meng Huaijin, the formidable official her late mother trusted above everyone else. Ten years older and bound to her by a complicated family title, he becomes her guardian, protector, and the center of the home she slowly rebuilds. As dependence turns into forbidden love, Meng Huaijin’s fear, pride, and political obligations drive him to reject her. Shu Wan leaves, builds an independent life in Dongcheng, and returns five years later as a television reporter—only to find that neither of them has truly moved on. Their reunion draws them into political rivalries, corruption cases, and the criminal network connected to her parents’ deaths. When the truth reveals that her parents were undercover heroes and their surviving enemy begins targeting her, Meng Huaijin’s fierce protection becomes impossible to separate from his need to control. After danger forces years of silence into the open, they must decide whether love can survive grief, scandal, unequal power, and the wounds they inflicted on each other.
