Six Years Later: Wrecking His World with Quadruplets - Chapter 182
Chapter 182
The answer, naturally, was impossible to know.
Di Shijing wasn’t about to ask, either.
Later that night, Nan Zhiyi was clearly exhausted. She lay slumped against the hospital bed, her small face buried in her arms.
She was dressed lightly in only a thin blouse, leaving the fair skin of her nape exposed. Seeing this, Di Shijing brought his coat over and gently draped it over her shoulders.
Nan Zhiyi woke up during the latter half of the night.
After a moment of grogginess, her mind cleared, and she noticed the men’s coat draped over her. She couldn’t help but recall the night she had spent accompanying her grandmother in the hospital.
Subconsciously, she looked up toward the man, only to lock eyes with his dark, deep gaze. A slight, strange sensation flickered through her heart.
Nan Zhiyi immediately placed the coat on the bedside table and whispered, “I’m going to check Wanwan’s temperature.”
Di Shijing didn’t respond, sitting quietly on the other side of the bed as he watched her work.
“Her fever has broken, and her temperature is back to normal. After a few more days of rest, she should be fully recovered.”
Nan Zhiyi felt relieved. She tucked the girl in, watching her daughter sleep soundly, making soft little snoring sounds.
That palm-sized face was so adorable that she felt an urge to pinch it. However, she couldn’t bear to wake her, so she suppressed the itch in her hands.
Most importantly, Di Shijing was still watching.
Before long, Xianxian woke up beside them.
Nan Zhiyi looked over just as her son sat up, his small brows furrowed in discomfort.
“What’s wrong?” she asked softly.
“I didn’t take a bath. It feels gross to sleep like this.”
Xianxian had just woken up, but his subconscious was fully aware he hadn’t bathed today. It had kept him from sleeping soundly, making him feel restless all over.
Di Shijing had been staying by the bedside to watch for any changes in his daughter’s condition. Hearing Xianxian’s complaint, he remarked, “I told you to go back, but you refused.”
Nan Zhiyi knew her son had always been a stickler for cleanliness and had a bit of a germaphobic streak. She spoke up gently, “It’s alright. I’ll take you to the bathroom to give you a sponge bath.”
Xianxian nodded, rubbing his eyes.
Nan Zhiyi stood up, preparing to go to the bathroom to run the hot water, when Di Shijing suddenly interrupted. “You rest. I’ll do it.”
He picked Xianxian up and headed into the bathroom.
By now, it was very late.
Nan Zhiyi stared fixedly at the closed bathroom door, listening to the sound of running water and movement coming from inside. She felt a bit dazed.
Although she had heard from Hengheng and Wanwan about how Di Shijing usually interacted with them and knew he had treated them well over the years, this was the first time she was seeing it with her own eyes.
Her heart was a whirlwind of complex emotions. There were still so many things she couldn’t understand.
Back then, if he had no feelings for her, why did he raise the two children she gave birth to?
A little while later.
After his bath, Xianxian felt much better. He looked soft and refreshed as he leaned over to give Nan Zhiyi a kiss. “Goodnight, Pretty Auntie.”
With that, he climbed back onto the bed to continue sleeping.
Di Shijing stared down at the two of them while drying his hands with a towel. He felt inexplicably annoyed, and his expression was rather sour.
Whether it was his son or his daughter, he was the one who had raised them single-handedly. So why was it that the first time they met Nan Zhiyi, they weren’t just accepting of her, but were incredibly intimate?
It made Di Shijing feel as though he had been betrayed by the two little rascals.
After being kissed by her son, Nan Zhiyi kept an eye on Di Shijing’s reaction. Seeing his disgruntled expression, she couldn’t help but want to laugh.
Early the next morning.
Mumu was completely recovered and full of energy. She sat on the edge of the bed, swinging Nan Zhiyi’s hand back and forth.
The doctor came by for an examination and announced, “She’s recovered well. She can be discharged now.”
Hearing this, Di Shijing turned to Zhou Yi and instructed, “Go handle the discharge procedures.”
Seeing their posture of preparing to head home, Nan Zhiyi felt it wasn’t appropriate to overstay. She took the initiative to say, “Since the child is fine now, I’ll be going.”
Mumu suddenly tightened her grip on Nan Zhiyi’s hand, clearly reluctant to let her go. She stared at Nan Zhiyi for several seconds before writing in her notebook: “I know Pretty Auntie took care of me yesterday. Can I see you again next time?”
After reading that line, Nan Zhiyi’s heart softened. She replied with a smile, “I should be able to. I’m working at your Daddy’s company right now.”
Mumu’s eyes lit up, and she quickly scribbled another sentence: “Then next time, if I go to Daddy’s company, can I see Auntie?”
Nan Zhiyi smiled without saying a word, glancing over at Di Shijing.
The little girl immediately understood and looked eagerly at her father, asking, “Can I?”
Di Shijing caught sight of the question on the notepad and felt a moment of hesitation. For some reason, seeing his daughter-who had always been shy around strangers-clinging so much to Nan Zhiyi made him feel slightly uneasy.
However, he was always powerless against his daughter’s pleas. After only a few rounds of eye contact, Di Shijing nodded. “You can.”
Nan Zhiyi breathed a sigh of relief, secretly feeling fortunate that there would be a better opportunity to meet again next time.
After that, she said her goodbyes and left.
Once she was gone, Di Shijing narrowed his eyes as he watched the two little ones staring longingly at the doorway. He asked, “Have you two met her before?”
The two little ones were startled, but they immediately shook their heads.
“No.”
Xianxian said with a natural expression, “But I don’t know why, when we met for the first time, that auntie just felt really kind. I just wanted to be close to her.”
The little guy added, “I’m sure my sister feels the same way.”
Hearing this, Mumu nodded without a second thought in agreement.
Di Shijing remained somewhat suspicious.
He always felt that these two little ones knew Nan Zhiyi’s identity.
After all, her name was right there.
They weren’t strangers to the Nan Family, either!
Yet, the two little ones looked so sincere that he couldn’t find any flaws in their story.
In the end, Di Shijing didn’t say anything more. He simply looked at the two of them, lost in thought…
Nan Zhiyi hadn’t slept much all night. When she returned home, the fatigue on her face was unmistakable.
Hengheng and Wanwan were having breakfast with their grandparents.
As soon as they saw her, Hengheng asked, “Mommy, how is Mumu?”
“Her fever has broken. She’s fine now.”
Nan Zhiyi had let the two little ones at home know that she wouldn’t be back last night.
“That’s good then.”
Everyone at the table breathed a sigh of relief.
After breakfast, Nan Zhiyi felt a bit more refreshed. She changed into clean clothes and headed to the company.
For the next while, she didn’t run into Di Shijing again.
Word was that the Di Corporation’s annual gala was approaching. As the President, Di Shijing had many decisions to make and was simply too busy to get away.
During this time, Nan Zhiyi also focused on her research.
She had just finished processing a set of data when Lin Zhizhi arrived.
“Zhiyi, the Di Corporation’s annual gala is held on a grand scale every year. Internal shareholders and the Chairman will all attend, and some important clients are invited as well.”
“Plus, there are lucky draws and benefits prepared for the employees. Anyway, it’s very lively! You’ll be attending, right?”
Lin Zhizhi’s tone carried a hint of expectation as she asked the last question.
Upon hearing this, Nan Zhiyi gave a faint smile and said, “Probably not. I’m not an employee of your Di Corporation. Besides, the optimization of the formula has already begun. My work will likely be finished long before your gala.”
“Is that so? I thought I’d be able to attend with you. What a pity…”
Lin Zhizhi looked disappointed.
“What’s there to be disappointed about?”
Nan Zhiyi was amused by her tone. “It’s just an event. After attending so many, they start to feel quite boring. I don’t have much interest in them.”
Lin Zhizhi gave her a deep look and said, “That may be true, but this year’s gala starts with an opening dance! They say the President will dance in person… As for his partner, everyone is speculating about who he’ll choose!”
A meaningful smile appeared on her face. “Everyone in the employee group chat is talking about you. If you don’t go, won’t you just be letting someone else snatch up the opportunity?”
