Summary
My brother and I were the twin terrors of our godforsaken backwater.
The year we were poorest, we each stole the other’s photos and started dating people online to scrape together our tuition.
To keep the other from finding out, he told me he’d taken a factory job. I told him I was shaking up bubble tea for a living.
The older girl I was dating was perfect in every way, except she liked my brother’s face a little too much. She kept wanting to meet.
Then, after I gently turned her down yet again, she suddenly said, “Baby, did you get into Jing University? I was helping mail out the admission letters and saw yours.”
“We can finally meet! What would you like as a gift to celebrate starting university—a sports car or an apartment?”
I did not handle pressure well. That scared the life out of me. I deleted her from my contacts that very night.
I thought that was the end of it. Then, on our first day of university, a gorgeous upperclasswoman cornered my brother at the gate.
“Xia Heming. Having fun playing dead?”
I tried to sneak away, sick with guilt, only to turn and walk straight into a guy.
Before I could look up and apologize, he asked, his voice icy,
“Xia Luling. Don’t you owe me an explanation?”
