Six Years Later: Wrecking His World with Quadruplets - Chapter 174
Chapter 174
Nan Zhiyi met his gaze, her expression remaining perfectly calm. “The children aren’t home during the day. They’re at school and won’t be back until evening.”
Di Shijing nodded noncommittally and didn’t press further.
Old Master Nan and the Old Madam finally understood the situation. Di Shijing knew their granddaughter had children, but he seemingly had no idea they were his…
At that thought, the two elders felt a surge of inexplicable irritation. Their granddaughter had suffered so much while she was with him.
The Old Madam reached for the wine nearby and poured a full glass for Di Shijing. “Jing, my health hasn’t fully recovered, so I can’t drink. Your Grandpa Nan and your own grandfather are getting on in years, so they shouldn’t drink either. Zhiyi is a girl and shouldn’t be drinking at all… Today is my discharge day and my move-in day, so I’m very happy. You’ll have to drink a bit more on our behalf, alright?”
Di Shijing took the glass and downed it in one go, offering no refusal.
To his surprise, the Old Madam continued to refill his glass throughout the meal. Gradually, Di Shijing realized she was targeting him. He was somewhat confused, but he didn’t call her out on it.
During this time, Old Master Di finally accepted reality. He sighed inwardly, making no mention of the children. Instead, he looked at Nan Zhiyi and asked, “It must not have been easy, being out there on your own all these years?”
Back then, she was so young when she left the country and gave birth to the two at home. Then she had two more, all while being unmarried…
Old Master Di immediately jumped to the conclusion that Nan Zhiyi had encountered another ‘bad man’!
The thought of the girl being bullied by some man in a foreign land made his heart ache. Little Nan had truly been through so much!
He quickly tried to comfort her. “The past is in the past. We must look forward! If you meet a bad one, just throw him away! There are plenty of good men in this world. In the future, Grandpa will introduce you to some outstanding young talents!”
Unaware of Old Master Di’s internal monologue, Nan Zhiyi simply smiled and played along. “Alright, then I’ll have to trouble you to look out for me!”
Di Shijing narrowed his eyes, feeling a prickle of annoyance. What was this old man talking about all of a sudden? Had he gotten drunk without even touching the wine?
Frowning, he began aggressively piling green vegetables into Old Master Di’s bowl. Before long, the bowl was overflowing with greens.
Seeing this, Old Master Di couldn’t help but glare at him. “What are you doing?”
The girl had finally made the meat dishes he liked, yet this brat was filling his bowl with nothing but vegetables!
Di Shijing added another helping of greens and replied flatly, “You’re talking too much. Eat more, it’ll help keep your mouth busy.”
He hid his emotions well, but Old Master Di saw right through him. This brat was jealous-the vinegar jar had definitely tipped over!
But the more he was told to stop, the more he wanted to talk!
Old Master Di turned back to Nan Zhiyi with an enthusiastic expression. “Girl, what kind of man do you like? What do you think of the gentle type? They know how to be considerate! Let me tell you, when looking for a man, stay away from those with cold, rigid tempers. Those types are no good; they don’t know how to cherish a wife. Staying with someone like that will only make you die of anger sooner or later…”
Di Shijing: “…”
That last sentence was clearly a jab at him.
Nan Zhiyi also sensed the subtext. Her lips curled into a slight smile as she suppressed a laugh. “Grandpa Di is right. I think the gentle type is quite nice, too.”
Seeing the opening, Old Master Nan and the Old Madam eagerly joined the discussion.
“Finding someone a few years older than you is also an option. They’re more stable, reliable, and warm-hearted.”
“Too much older isn’t good either; they don’t know anything about romance! Younger ones understand romance, but they’re often unsettled… Of course, if they’re obedient and well-behaved, that could work too. My granddaughter is so exceptional, she can definitely keep anyone in line!”
Spurred on by the Old Madam’s words, Old Master Di seemed to think of something and slapped the table in excitement.
“I have an old friend whose grandson just graduated from a prestigious university this year. He’s currently learning the ropes of management at his family’s company. I’ve met the boy-he’s handsome, and although he’s young, he’s steady, organized, and very filial. He even has a nice name: Jiang Yi.”
Old Master Di rambled on enthusiastically.
Beside him, Di Shijing’s brows were knitted so tightly they were almost touching.
Feeling a wave of displeasure, he reminded his Old Master, “Jiang Yi already has a fiancée!”
Old Master Di shot him a glance and retorted, “So what if he has a fiancée? People who are married can still get divorced, so it’s not like an engagement can’t be broken! I think he and the Girl would make a fine match.”
Turning back to Nan Zhiyi, he continued, “Girl, I’ll find some time to set up a meeting for you two. You can see for yourself then. If you like him, I’ll go and play matchmaker for you!”
Di Shijing’s face was now so dark it looked like ink could drip from it.
He pressed his tongue against his cheek and couldn’t help but snark at the Old Master, “Is the Di Family no longer able to support you? Instead of enjoying your retirement, you’re looking for a career change as a matchmaker?”
Old Master Di wasn’t angry at the sarcasm. He simply replied, “What I do is none of your business. What does me introducing a suitor to my Girl have to do with you? You’re a thing of the past, a failure-you don’t get a say!”
Di Shijing’s expression darkened even further…
Watching the grandfather and grandson bicker, Nan Zhiyi felt like laughing.
This was the first time she had seen Di Shijing so thoroughly defeated!
However, she held it in, fearing the man might actually lose his temper. She stepped in to smooth things over, saying, “Grandpa Di, please don’t go to the trouble. I’m far too busy with work right now; I’m afraid I don’t have the energy for blind dates.”
Old Master Di didn’t seem to care at all. “It’s fine, we can take our time picking. I’ll send some photos over later so your grandparents can help vet them too. If anyone catches your eye, we can meet them whenever you’re less busy! You have to plan for your future, don’t you?”
Seeing that Old Master Di was dead serious, Nan Zhiyi found it hard to handle. She laughed helplessly and urged him to eat more.
It took quite an effort to finally suppress his matchmaking urge.
Later, after dinner was over, Di Shijing was slightly tipsy.
He leaned back against the sofa, resting with his eyes closed.
Old Master Di showed no intention of leaving, pulling Old Master Nan into a game of chess.
Taking advantage of the moment when they weren’t paying attention, Old Madam Nan approached Nan Zhiyi with a worried expression. “Girl, my two precious great-grandsons haven’t eaten yet. What if they starve?”
Nan Zhiyi glanced toward the living room. Seeing that no one was noticing them, she whispered back, “Don’t worry, Aunt Zhang has already brought food up to them.”
Hearing this, the Old Madam finally let out a sigh of relief. “That’s good, that’s good.”
Nan Zhiyi nodded and helped the Old Madam to a seat nearby. “I’ll brew you a cup of wellness tea. Having a cup after a meal helps with digestion and is good for your health.”
“Alright.”
The Old Madam happily agreed.
While pouring the water, Nan Zhiyi also poured a cup for Di Shijing and took out some sobering medicine for him.
Di Shijing remained unaware, his eyes still closed.
Nan Zhiyi nudged him gently. “Wake up.”
Di Shijing opened his deep, dark eyes and stared at her.
“Take one. You’ll sober up in half an hour.”
Nan Zhiyi opened her palm and held the pill out to him.
Di Shijing looked at it for a few seconds before suddenly leaning forward. Using her palm as a plate, his tongue swept out and took the pill from her hand.
His warm lips brushed against Nan Zhiyi’s palm unexpectedly, and the soft tip of his tongue felt like a feather fluttering against her skin…
Nan Zhiyi’s eyes widened as if she had been hit by an electric shock.
At the same time, a wave of heat rushed to her ears, turning them a delicate shade of crimson.
She felt both embarrassed and flustered.
This man… he actually used such a shameful way to take his medicine!
