Chapter 4
Gu Yan lay back down beside me at around six in the morning.
Before heading out, he still squeezed toothpaste onto my toothbrush for me.
But as I stared at the toothbrush lying across the rim of the rinsing cup, I felt nothing but disgust.
Without hesitation, I tossed it into the trash can.
Right at that moment, Gu Yan walked into the bathroom.
He caught me in the act of throwing the toothbrush away.
His gaze shifted from the trash can back to me.
His expression immediately softened, becoming tender once more.
He walked up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist.
In a gentle voice by my ear, he asked, “What’s wrong? Why throw away a perfectly good toothbrush?”
Ha, what an actor.
Turns out I’ve been sharing my bed with an Oscar-winning performer all along.
I pretended nothing had happened and smiled at him.
“Nothing, really. I’ve been using this electric toothbrush for a while now. I’m just tired of it and want to switch to a new one.”
With that, I pulled a spare toothbrush out of the cabinet.
Before heading out, I took extra care to dress up.
Ever since we started trying for a baby, I rarely put on makeup.
Gu Yan leaned against the doorway, giving me a once-over.
“Got plans today?”
“Yeah, meeting a friend.”
“Which friend? You’re all dressed up. Do I know them?”
I paused mid-swipe of blush, then walked over to him.
Looping my arms around his neck, I smiled.
“What’s this? Jealous?”
I straightened his collar and looked up at him.
“I’m meeting Qingqing. It’s been a while since we’ve had a meal together.”
Qingqing is my best friend.
As soon as I said her name, a flicker of something complicated crossed his eyes.
But he quickly masked it.
He casually said, “I’ll drive you there.”
“No need. You’ve been working so hard, and it’s your day off. I wouldn’t have the heart to make you drive me.”
I smiled brightly at him, as if we were back in the early days of our relationship.
Acting, huh? Who doesn’t know how to act?
After leaving the apartment, I didn’t head straight for the elevator.
Sure enough, Gu Yan called Hu Feier.
His tone wasn’t pleasant.
Gone was the teasing intimacy from their entanglement last night.
“I’m telling you one more time: fabricate evidence if you must, but if he actually dares to do anything with her, don’t blame me for what happens next.”
Standing outside the door, I let out a cold laugh.
The absurdity and disgust were overwhelming.
But at least, the fish were biting.
