Chapter 6
With Fu Jun’s relentless support, it took Xu Wanning less than half a month after returning to the country to seamlessly integrate into the social circle.
The night before I was set to leave the country, I dropped them off for a business meeting and prepared to head back.
“Tomorrow morning’s flight.”
I spoke softly to Fu Jun, “Mr. Fu, I’ll head back to rest now.”
He nodded faintly, his expression indifferent.
But Xu Wanning, standing nearby, suddenly spoke up: “Stop.”
Holding a glass of red wine, she tilted her head slightly and looked at me. “I heard you’re going abroad to see an art exhibition?”
“Your hand is ruined; you can’t even hold a paintbrush. Zhou Jing, what kind of grand artist dream are you still chasing?”
I ignored her and continued walking toward the door.
She hurled the wine glass at my back. The wine splashed out, staining the fabric of my shirt.
“Did I say you could leave?”
Xu Wanning’s voice dropped, her tone cold. “Get back here and help me drink tonight.”
“After all, people like you, born lowly, exist only to serve others.”
I froze in place, motionless.
Fu Jun let out a soft sigh, a mix of helplessness and indulgence in his tone as he said to me, “Listen to Ah Ning, Jingjing.”
“Otherwise, I might have to cancel tomorrow’s flight for you.”
At that moment.
I suddenly thought of He Zhou again.
Back when I was in the studio, the first time Xu Wanning humiliated me in public.
She pinched her nose and, standing several meters away, loudly declared, “So smelly.”
“How can someone as lowly as you have the nerve to stay in the same studio as us?”
That night, I called He Zhou.
“Are people born with differences in status, some noble and some lowly?”
At the time, he was on his way to a mission.
The car window was open.
The wind from the wilderness rushed through the receiver and into my ear.
His voice was slightly blurred, but it carried a thunderous power: “Jingjing, all people are born equal.”
“No matter where you’re born or where you grow up, like right now, the same moon shines down on all of us.”
