Chapter 5
Maybe it was because I was about to go out and look for him.
That night, I dreamed of He Zhou again.
We grew up in the same orphanage.
He had always been brave and full of a sense of justice.
Later, he became a SWAT officer.
I wanted to learn painting and take the art exam route, so he sent me all his earnings.
“Go to a better studio, and don’t skimp on art supplies.”
He came to my school, patted my head, and handed me a card.
“Just focus on achieving your dreams. Leave everything else to me, Jingjing.”
I wanted to become a famous painter, to make He Zhou proud of me.
But all of that was destroyed by Xu Wanning.
In the second month after my fingers were broken, He Zhou returned from his mission.
He almost went mad.
The sharpshooter of his team, capable of hitting targets from thousands of meters away without deviating a millimeter.
But holding my hand, his own trembled uncontrollably.
He couldn’t suppress the fury in his voice: “I’ll kill them.”
“Don’t say things in anger, He Zhou.”
I leaned against the crook of his shoulder, exhausted, and closed my eyes. “I’m so tired.”
“I just want to sleep for a while.”
For a month, my injuries healed slowly.
Fu Jun kept sending people to torment me mentally.
Every day, I woke up repeatedly from pain and nightmares.
It wasn’t until I leaned into He Zhou’s embrace and smelled his familiar scent that I finally relaxed.
The Xu Family’s influence was too great, especially with their alliance with the Fu Family.
They produced a diagnosis proving Xu Wanning had a mental illness.
And they paid me a large sum for medical expenses.
He Zhou, upright and noble, risking his life to protect everyone.
But he couldn’t do anything about Xu Wanning.
When my injuries healed, he returned to his team.
Before leaving, he held me and promised, “One day, I’ll make sure Xu Wanning faces justice.”
“Believe in me, Jingjing.”
Tears streamed down my face as I nodded desperately.
I had always believed in him.
I just… never got to wait for him.
