Chapter 9
As expected, Uncle Zhao wasn’t angry.
He just let out a snort of laughter. “Still acting tough even here, huh.”
He didn’t plead for Chen Sui or say anything on his behalf, but nobody there was stupid.
Besides, I had already passed on my words to Mu Zejia.
The one who had made the biggest fuss at first, Mu Zejia, didn’t say anything more and agreed to settle things privately.
…
When we left the police station, only Chen Sui and I remained.
Mu Zejia probably feared Chen Sui would come after him again, so as soon as they let him go, he bolted.
At 2 a.m., Chen Sui and I walked side by side down the empty little road.
He silently took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders, then took my hand before speaking in a low voice.
“Did I scare you just now?”
I nodded. “A little.”
“There won’t be a next time, Qiao Xi. Don’t be afraid of me.”
I looked at the big dog in front of me, 1.87 meters tall but clearly feeling down, and stopped walking.
I stepped onto the little curb at the side so I was eye-level with him.
Cupping his face in both hands, I spoke slowly and clearly.
“I’m not afraid of you hitting someone. I know you did it for me.”
He pressed his lips together and said nothing.
I continued, “I’m just afraid you’ll get yourself a record at the police station because of hitting him. It’s not worth it for that kind of scum, you know, Chen?”
As I spoke, I shook his head a little.
“So, really, don’t let there be a next time. Promise me, okay? Chen Sui.”
He lowered his eyes and nodded, pulling me into his arms.
“Okay.”
“I promise you.”
Even though he’d been so calm and arrogant at the police station just now, Chen Sui was now worried I’d be afraid of him, and had become a bit cautious.
I couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him, so I snuggled obediently into his embrace.
