Chapter 13
I immediately hid behind my mother’s back.
The one who had come looking for someone was the sternest Nanny from my Grandmother’s quarters. I was afraid my loud chatter would get me another scolding.
My mother shot me a glance, the dislike in her eyes plain to see.
She straightened her clothes and went out.
A short while later, she brought back some news.
My father was to set out to quell the unrest once more.
Upon returning from the Main Courtyard, my mother immediately began to prepare his travel things.
I didn’t know if it was because my mother had let her true feelings slip.
I always felt that her figure as she packed had a touch of joy about it.
After all, once my father left, it would be quick if he returned in a year or half.
At the front gate, my father mounted his horse.
A few concubines and my siblings crowded around him, tearfully urging him to come back safely and soon.
My father gave a few brief responses, then looked up to see my mother and me standing on the steps. He frowned slightly.
For some reason, his expression softened a little.
“I know about Jin’er’s marriage. There’s no need to hastily deal with those matchmakers.”
He paused, then added, “Jin’er is still young. It’s fine to raise her for a few more years.”
My mother smiled gently in reply, her voice as soft as cotton, betraying no emotion.
I forced a smile, walked up to my father, and performed a Wanfu.
“Father, I wish you victory and a safe return.”
My father looked at me, as if wanting to say more, but in the end only said gruffly, “Don’t keep pestering your mother with nonsense. Stay home and work on your dowry embroidery.”
With that, he spurred his horse and rode away.
