Chapter 14
With my father absent, my mother and I pursued our educational endeavors even more boldly.
And so, I became the new teacher at the school.
I first secretly taught a few trustworthy people, who then acted as instructors to pass on the knowledge to others in the school.
My mother and I made an agreement.
For now, the school would only offer free literacy classes to children who could not afford to attend school. Those with better aptitude could advance to the next stage, where they would receive basic courses in physics and mathematics, gradually enlightening the minds of the people.
To preserve the spark of the Revolution, the classroom content would absolutely not touch upon any ideological concepts for the time being.
My mother returned to her family home. My maternal grandfather and several uncles were civil officials-not high-ranking, but they did have some students and enjoyed a good reputation.
I don’t know exactly what she said, but in any case, the matter of this charitable school was now officially recognized.
Since it was a good deed, it gradually gained some renown.
My mother and I no longer had to be overly cautious when coming and going.
Day by day, more and more people came to study, drawn by our reputation.
After all, the few small physics experiments I set up were quite novel.
The first time I saw Pei Yi, I knew at once that he was no ordinary person.
Though he wore plain clothes and spoke with remarkable calm and approachability,
he could not conceal his natural bearing.
Someone beside me told me that he had arrived the latest, but learned the fastest.
He was very adept at drawing inferences, and sometimes even stumped the instructors with his questions.
I understood immediately.
So, the questions Mr. Fu had brought to me a few days ago were actually raised by him.
I looked up at him-perhaps my gaze was too obvious.
He also turned his head to look at me and nodded in greeting.
