Summary
Chapter 0 In my dreams, I was forever losing myself in reckless abandon with a man. Then one day, I finally saw his face clearly. It was Li Jici-the Chief Minister of the Court of Judicial Review, a man as cold as frost and famously untouched by women. When my elder brother was falsely accused, I went to beg him for help. He looked utterly unmoved and mocked me for indulging in wishful thinking. Yet in that night’s dream, he seemed all the more pleased. On the day my brother cleared his name and was released from prison, I made a point of thanking him. From behind the door, he merely said, cool and distant, “No need.” But in the dream, he was no longer cold at all. Reality and dream were worlds apart, so I was certain it was nothing more than my own fantasy. I buried the matter deep in my heart. Then one day, a banquet was held at our estate. During the feast, one of the male guests drank too much and let something slip. “You don’t know this, but don’t be fooled by how icy our Lord Li seems. He has a peach-shaped birthmark on his chest. When I teased him about it as a child, he even cried in secret.” “What?” I could not help but be stunned-because the Li Jici in my dreams had that birthmark too. And Li Jici, who had seemed completely indifferent even as others recounted his embarrassing childhood stories, suddenly froze with his wine cup in hand. He stared hard at my expression, and in that instant, I realized a shameful and terrifying truth- Those beautiful dreams of the past few days did not seem to belong to me alone.
