Chapter 5
For a moment, the atmosphere was deathly silent.
I opened my mouth, but didn’t know what to say. I just stared blankly at Lu He.
So this is what it feels like-when sadness reaches its peak, you can’t even cry.
“Jiajia, don’t misunderstand.”
Suddenly, my hand was held. The warmth in my palm snapped me back to reality.
I didn’t know when Zhao Yue had come to stand in front of me.
She patted the back of my hand soothingly, her voice low but gentle:
“Just now, Lu He said that since I’ve just arrived and don’t have a place to stay, and it’s not safe for me to be alone in a hotel, he suggested I stay here for a few days. Once I’ve cleared my head and go back, he’ll bring Tuan Zi back.”
As she spoke, she glanced at Lu He and smiled softly: “I didn’t expect that after all these years, he’s still so considerate.”
I looked at her, and after a moment, I couldn’t help but find it a little funny.
If there’s anyone in this world who knows exactly how to stab me in the heart, it has to be Zhao Yue.
Even though I know she’s innocent and means no harm.
At least, I think she means no harm.
I still remember, back then, Lu He was famous in our department for being aloof. He came from a good family and was even better looking, but he was so distant and cold that people didn’t dare approach him.
The main reason I got to know Lu He was because we were assigned to the same group in the lab.
That period was hectic every day. Zhao Yue saw how I was always coming and going early and late, and felt sorry for me. She brought me nutritious soup to the lab almost every day.
Gradually, Lu He and Zhao Yue started interacting, and the soup went from one portion to two.
Later, after the two of them got together, Zhao Yue joked that she didn’t want to leave me out, so she liked to invite me along to everything.
After I turned her down a few times, Zhao Yue stopped asking.
One time, I was working late in the lab, and somehow ended up going out to eat with them.
At the time, Zhao Yue and I were chatting and didn’t notice that Lu He had ordered three bowls of scallion oil noodles.
Zhao Yue loved noodles, but she didn’t like scallions.
She frowned ever so slightly, but said nothing. She picked up her chopsticks and started eating the noodles in small bites.
When you like someone, you subconsciously notice everything about them. Lu He was no exception.
He noticed Zhao Yue was deliberately avoiding the scallions, and after a moment’s thought, he pulled out a napkin and laid it on the table.
Under Zhao Yue’s surprised gaze, he picked out every single scallion from her bowl.
When he was done, Lu He looked at Zhao Yue, who was still staring wide-eyed, his expression softening as he smiled: “Now you can eat.”
Back then, Zhao Yue used the same tone, and halfway through eating, she blushed and whispered to me, “Jiajia, Lu He is so considerate.”
I didn’t say anything, just stared at the bowl of noodles in front of Zhao Yue, feeling a little dazed.
After that, Lu He often asked me privately about Zhao Yue’s likes and dislikes. I answered everything, playing the role of the helpful friend, but I never went out with them again.
My thoughts returned to the present.
I pulled my hand back, forcing down the bitterness in my heart, and walked straight to the storage room.
I gathered some of Tuan Zi’s daily things, picked up Tuan Zi, who was stretching lazily on the sofa, and throughout the whole process, I didn’t look at Lu He even once.
As I passed by Zhao Yue again, I paused, tugged at the corner of my lips, and said softly:
“Lu He has never been a considerate person. He’s only like that because it’s you.”
