Chapter 6
It started to rain on my way back, but fortunately, where I live is very close to Lu He’s place-only about a ten-minute walk.
After getting home and taking a shower, I bathed Tuan Zi as well. By the time I finished, it was almost ten o’clock.
Zhao Yue sent me a WeChat message:
“Jiajia, I really didn’t come back this time to fight you for Lu He.”
I thought about it for a long time before finally replying: “But you two slept together last night, didn’t you?”
There was no response after that.
Staring at my phone screen as it was about to go dark, some things suddenly came to mind.
A few days ago, my best friend came here on a business trip, and Lu He and I invited her out for dinner.
While we were waiting for the food, my friend’s gaze kept shifting back and forth between Lu He and me.
I felt a little uneasy and subconsciously looked up at Lu He.
His expression didn’t change. He naturally reached out, took my hand in his palm, and gently stroked it.
It felt like a kind of acknowledgment-or perhaps, a declaration.
That warmth spread from my hand, making my whole heart tingle and burn.
It wasn’t until the waiter finished serving all the dishes that I finally snapped out of it a little.
Then I heard my friend talking to the waiter, saying she’d accidentally ordered the wrong dish, that her friend didn’t eat scallions, and asked if they could swap the scallion oil chicken for something else.
I froze for a few seconds, then looked up and met Lu He’s gaze.
Seeing the flash of surprise in his eyes, I lowered my head, suddenly feeling utterly embarrassed.
Maybe I really don’t matter much to him. Otherwise, after all this time, why hasn’t Lu He noticed that, just like Zhao Yue, I don’t like scallions either?
I should have realized this sooner.
……
After spacing out for a while, I turned on my computer and started looking for a new place to move.
Half a year ago, I moved to this city because of a job transfer.
Besides Lu He, I didn’t know anyone here. He was the one who helped me find my current apartment.
He said it belonged to his little uncle, Shen Xianzhi, and had been vacant for a while.
Shen Xianzhi graduated from a prestigious university abroad, holds dual master’s degrees in finance and business administration, and is only three years older than Lu He.
Come to think of it, I’d actually met him once before.
It was at Lu He’s birthday party. After my confession failed, I could feel everyone’s mocking and sympathetic stares even without looking up.
In that awkward moment, only Shen Xianzhi, sitting in the corner, gave me a friendly smile.
I didn’t think too much about it at the time and decided to live here. I asked Lu He for Shen Xianzhi’s WeChat, and every month I transferred the rent to him at market price.
Other than that, I haven’t had any contact with Shen Xianzhi.
I stared at the screen for who knows how long, found a few decent locations, added some agents’ contacts, and gradually felt my head growing heavy.
I rubbed my temples, but my vision started to blur.
Eventually, I just shut off the computer and collapsed completely onto the sofa, unable to muster any energy at all.
Most likely, it was because of getting caught in the rain today.
In a daze, I seemed to sense someone approaching.
Then, a cool sensation touched my forehead.
