Chapter 4
The sound of the door lock turning outside pulled me back to reality.
Zhao Yue stood at the doorway, her gaze was complex as she looked over at us.
Her eyes carried a touch of awkwardness, along with a knowing guilt and pity.
It made me feel as if a heavy, sticky weight was blocking my chest, making it hard to breathe.
Zhao Yue glanced at me, then at Lu He. After a brief hesitation, she immediately explained that she had come in a hurry last night, and Lu He had kindly taken her in.
She was here now because she had accidentally left something in the guest room last night.
When she said this, Zhao Yue deliberately emphasized the words “guest room.”
After a pause, Lu He finally said, “Alright, I’ll get it for you.”
I silently listened to their clumsy excuses and pulled at the corner of my mouth.
As my gaze shifted, I happened to see the familiar set of keys in Zhao Yue’s hand.
My head buzzed for a moment.
It seemed that even in this, I wasn’t the only one.
Lu He soon came out of the room holding a bag.
When Zhao Yue reached out to take the bag, Lu He suddenly grabbed her wrist.
“Didn’t the doctor say your symptoms were mild? Why hasn’t your allergy gotten better?” His brows were tightly furrowed, but his tone was gentle.
Lu He had never spoken to me with such a soft, caring voice, not even during the most ambiguous two months between us.
Zhao Yue’s wrist was very pale, with a few small red rashes, almost invisible.
She raised her eyebrows slightly and smiled at Lu He. “It’s almost better, the swelling’s gone.”
Lu He stared at her intently; his tense lips finally relaxed. “That’s good.”
The two of them stood in the living room talking, as if no one else was there.
For a moment, I felt a little dazed.
Lu He always seemed to be like this with her.
Every word and glance was filled with passionate affection-completely different from the perfunctory way he treated me.
After they broke up, Lu He pretended he had moved on, but refused to let anyone else get close.
Now, the two of them were back together.
Lu He could finally drop all his defenses, almost deliberately and forcefully letting Zhao Yue know he didn’t want to lose her again.
At that moment, I felt a sharp, gnawing jealousy.
Just then, Tuan Zi rubbed against my feet, acting spoiled-probably starving.
By the time I found the cat food and fed Tuan Zi, the two of them were still talking.
Not wanting to stay and awkwardly watch them reminisce, I packed up my things, ready to leave as soon as possible.
When I reached the door, I hesitated for a moment, then took the spare key from my pocket and placed it on the cabinet by the door.
There were some things I didn’t want to hear him say-it would be too humiliating.
But just then, Lu He’s voice came from behind me: “Zhao Yue is allergic to cat fur.”
I turned to look at him, not understanding what he meant.
Lu He only lifted his eyes slightly, his tone calm but leaving no room for doubt:
“Take Tuan Zi with you.”
