Chapter 4
I returned to the bedroom, lying on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
Images of Gu Ze’s past flashed through my mind.
I remembered the earthquake of magnitude 6.2 that struck during our second year of high school, causing the school building to shake violently, and everyone panicked and fled outside.
Halfway through the escape, Gu Ze saw that I hadn’t kept up and, without hesitation, risked the aftershocks to run back to the sixth floor and rescue me, who was injured.
After surviving the disaster, we collapsed on the ground, and I asked him why he ran back, wasn’t he afraid.
Gu Ze, panting heavily, pressed his still trembling calf and flashed me a smile.
“Afraid, yes, but I’m more afraid of losing you.”
The passionate love of a teenager, like the scorching sun at noon, was intense and bright.
I turned away from his gaze and said.
“Gu Ze, what’s most important for us now is studying.”
After that day, Gu Ze put away his beloved basketball and started scratching his head over test papers, asking me for help.
In just one year, Gu Ze went from the bottom of the class to the top two hundred in the grade.
Eventually, I got my wish to go to B University, and Gu Ze also got into S University in the same city.
On the night of the freshman party, he sneaked onto the field of my school, holding a guitar, and sang a confession song to me, and we naturally got together.
The following four years were our sweetest and happiest times, Gu Ze gave me ample love and tolerance, spoiling me to the point of being a bit arrogant.
Once, after a misunderstanding with Gu Ze, I got angry and hung up the phone.
That night, I saw Gu Ze, who was supposed to be out of town, appear under my dormitory building.
He gently hugged me, patiently explaining.
“How can we let our sweetie go to bed with emotions?”
After graduation, I married Gu Ze, who was then in a career slump, with pockets cleaner than his face.
Our wedding was simple, a pair of plain rings and a few tables of friends and family, even the wedding dress was the cheapest rental.
When Gu Ze slipped the ring onto my finger, his eyes were full of guilt and heartache.
“Shu Jia, I’m sorry for the simplicity. I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
I hugged him, laughing.
“I don’t care about those things, I just want you to love me forever.”
Gu Ze vowed to me firmly.
“Gu Ze will love Shu Jia forever, until the moment life ends.”
Back then, his promises were still ringing in my ears, but the person beside me had long changed his heart.
