Chapter 5
The next day, Gu Ze got up early to make me a sumptuous breakfast.
Seeing my pale face as I stood in the middle of the living room, Gu Ze hurriedly approached, wrapped his arms around me, and guided me to sit at the table, apologetically saying:
“Sweetie, don’t be mad. I promise I won’t drink that much again next time.”
I didn’t touch the chopsticks. After a long silence, I fixed my gaze on his T-shirt and asked:
“When did you start liking this type of clothing?”
Following my gaze, Gu Ze looked down at his boldly colored, exaggeratedly patterned T-shirt and chuckled lightly:
“I saw Xiao Zhao wearing something like this last time, and it looked so energetic. I asked him to get me one too, just to change things up occasionally.”
Liar.
Xiao Zhao is his assistant, and he usually wears either formal suits or checkered shirts. This isn’t his style at all.
My hand, resting on my knee, clenched into a fist. I stared intently into Gu Ze’s eyes, trying to catch a glimpse of guilt or unease.
But unfortunately, there was none.
Gu Ze’s openness made me momentarily doubt whether everything I saw last night was just a nightmare.
Yet the sting in my palm reminded me that it was all real.
I opened my mouth, the words of accusation at the tip of my tongue, when my phone rang.
The caregiver looking after my grandma called to tell me that my grandma had suddenly fainted and was convulsing, and she didn’t know what to do.
I panicked instantly.
Seeing my distress, Gu Ze immediately took my phone and handled the situation for me.
On the way to the hospital, Gu Ze comforted me while continuously reaching out to his contacts, trying to get in touch with authoritative doctors.
Though my grandma’s condition was critical, thanks to Gu Ze’s proper arrangements, the emergency surgery was conducted promptly.
The surgery lasted until two in the afternoon. Gu Ze went out midway to buy me milk and bread.
I kept my eyes fixed on the door of the operating room, shaking my head, not wanting to eat.
Gu Ze unwrapped the bread and placed it in my hand.
“If you don’t eat anything, how will you have the strength to take care of grandma when she comes out?”
With tears in my eyes, I took it and ate mechanically, my eyes suddenly welling up with tears.
“Grandma is my only family left. Will she…”
Gu Ze hugged me tightly, gently patting my back.
“Grandma will live a long life, don’t be afraid.”
At two in the afternoon, the surgery finally ended.
However, because of grandma’s age, her body couldn’t handle it, and she needed to stay in the hospital for further observation.
My heart, which had been hanging in suspense, finally settled.
Gu Ze went to arrange the follow-up hospitalization procedures for me, while I went home to pack some toiletries.
When I returned, Gu Ze was nowhere to be found.
Grandma had already woken up. She raised her hand to touch my face, comforting me.
“Don’t cry, I’ve grown old, and this day was bound to come.”
I choked up, holding grandma’s hand.
“Grandma, don’t say that. You’ll live a long life. I can’t do without you.”
“Xiao Gu is a good boy. With him by your side, I’m at ease. You two must be well together.”
Hearing grandma mention Gu Ze made my heart ache.
Before discovering his affair with Su Qing, I was convinced that he and I could grow old together.
But now…
I don’t know how much sincerity Gu Ze still has left.
If he loves me, why betray our marriage?
If he doesn’t love me, then why go to such lengths to hide it from me?
Seeing me not speaking for a long time, grandma looked worried.
“Are you having a quarrel with Xiao Gu?”
I forced a smile: “No, grandma, you just focus on getting better, don’t worry about us.”
“That’s good. I hope you always stay happy.”
Not long after, grandma fell asleep, and I quietly left the ward.
Feeling suffocated, I went to the corridor for some air, only to overhear Gu Ze on the phone.
“It’s a critical time for the company right now. My love for her is gone, but there are still interests entangled. Be patient a little longer, I will divorce her.
“Okay, don’t be mad, sweetie. I’ll come back to you later, alright? She’s definitely going to take care of her grandma tonight, so we’ll have plenty of time.”
I stood there, feeling as if I had fallen into an icy abyss.
So that’s how it is.
I took one last deep look at Gu Ze and turned to leave.
