Demonic King of the Metropolis - Chapter 8 - Why Don't You Come In?
Under the starry sky, a gentle beam of moonlight cast its glow. Chen Shuran, in her light blue top, and Tang Jie, bare-chested, walked along the narrow path, both silent.
“Are you still mad?” Chen Shuran couldn’t bear the awkward silence any longer and tried to break the ice.
“Mad?” Tang Jie glanced at Chen Shuran, paused, then laughed, “Mad about what? I don’t understand what you’re saying.” He knew she was referring to what happened at the school gate earlier. He feigned ignorance, thinking this beauty’s attitude had taken a 180-degree turn toward him, and he couldn’t be happier.
“Then why were you quiet just now?” Chen Shuran looked at Tang Jie, skeptical, and asked again.
Tang Jie raised an eyebrow. Was being her bodyguard supposed to include small talk? His master hadn’t mentioned it, but maybe this young miss had her own demands.
“What do you want to hear?” Tang Jie mused for a moment. Since it was part of his task, he might as well comply. Perhaps young misses were just this hard to please.
Thinking so, Tang Jie pretended to be dutiful, and Chen Shuran understood his intentions immediately, feeling a bit embarrassed.
“Just say anything, whatever comes to mind.”
Anything? Hearing this, Tang Jie’s mischievous side emerged. With an impish smile, he sized up Chen Shuran and said, “Really? Anything at all?”
In truth, Tang Jie didn’t really know Chen Shuran yet. Though she might seem spoiled or arrogant to others, that wasn’t her nature. She didn’t want to rely on her family’s status. If she did, she would have revealed her identity when Zhu Nan attempted to violate her.
But she didn’t. She’d rather risk the danger than expose her background. This showed her strong sense of pride.
A rich second generation-a term many envy and disdain. Chen Shuran was exactly that. She had an identity that many coveted, yet she wasn’t particularly fond of it.
“You’re annoying!” Seeing Tang Jie’s teasing smile, Chen Shuran pouted and quickened her pace.
“Alright, to be honest, I was very angry at first. I even considered talking to your father and quitting this job. But then I saw your beauty and changed my mind, deciding to continue protecting you,” Tang Jie said slyly, noticing her shy and slightly angry demeanor.
“You…” Chen Shuran glared at Tang Jie, blushing with a hint of anger. She quickened her pace, ignoring him.
Tang Jie chuckled and followed her.
After walking for nearly an hour, Chen Shuran and Tang Jie arrived in front of a luxurious villa. Tang Jie stopped at the entrance, planning to watch Chen Shuran go inside before heading back to his apartment.
Just as Chen Shuran was about to enter, she noticed Tang Jie still standing there in a daze. Confused, she asked, “Why don’t you come in?”
“You’re home now, so I should head back,” Tang Jie replied with a smile.
“Aren’t you supposed to protect me?” Chen Shuran was puzzled. As her bodyguard, shouldn’t he be staying at the villa?
“I’m here to protect you, but that doesn’t mean I have to live with you,” Tang Jie explained honestly. Then he realized the implication of his words about living together and suddenly felt a bit embarrassed.
Chen Shuran seemed to understand. It appeared he wasn’t like the villa’s full-time bodyguards who ate, lived, and rotated shifts there. This realization left her slightly disappointed. After pondering for a moment, she said, “Then give me your phone number.” Since he wasn’t staying at the villa, she could contact him when necessary.
“I don’t have a phone number,” Tang Jie said, scratching his head, leaving Chen Shuran in disbelief.
In this day and age, the thought of someone not having a phone was unbelievable; even pigs wouldn’t believe it.
“I’m serious, don’t joke with me!”
“I’m serious too. I’m not joking,” Tang Jie shrugged, looking innocent.
“Honestly, it’s getting late. I need to head back. Otherwise, if I get robbed on the way, it’s one thing to lose my money, but if they rob me of something else, who will I cry to?” Tang Jie said playfully.
With that, he turned and left. Chen Shuran was momentarily stunned, and by the time she reacted, Tang Jie was already out of sight.
“That jerk…”
Watching Tang Jie disappear into the distance, Chen Shuran recalled the moment he appeared earlier and suddenly let out a sly smile.
Especially when Tang Jie coolly reprimanded those hoodlums before leaving, back then, Chen Shuran, caught in a dangerous situation, didn’t think much of it.
Now, looking back, she found it amusing. Who else could so fearlessly scold a dozen hoodlums, facing them without flinching like Tang Jie did?
Her curiosity about Tang Jie grew stronger, but alas, by the time she snapped out of it, Tang Jie had long disappeared.
Why run away? As her bodyguard, he belonged to her, ready to obey her commands whenever needed.
With a smile, Chen Shuran turned to open the door, only to suddenly realize she still had Tang Jie’s shirt draped over her shoulders.
The thought of such a funny scene made her chuckle again.
One could imagine a young man racing through the dark, windy night, bare-chested, covering the most important parts with his arms-what a sight that would be.
“Uh…”
On his way back to the apartment, Tang Jie suddenly noticed that people were looking at him oddly.
“Hmm?” Confused, he glanced down at himself, and in the next moment, his face turned bright red. He shouted, “Darn, my shirt!”
