Chapter 3
Chapter 3
I sat in the passenger seat of my brother’s supercar.
I watched as he drove with a casual, effortless air.
Suddenly, I spoke up. “Brother, I love you.”
My brother was checking the rearview mirror to monitor traffic, and he froze for a second at my words.
The mirror reflected my eyes, which were still red from crying.
I stared at him with those bloodshot eyes, my expression incredibly earnest.
“You’re the person I love most in the whole world, Brother,” I told him.
“And I’ll love you forever,” I added.
“-You’re the best brother I could ever have.”
My brother’s lips twitched.
His sharp-featured face remained expressionless, yet his ears turned a peculiar shade of red.
“Did your teacher tell you to come home and express your love to your family today?” he asked.
I shook my head. “No. I just wanted to tell you.”
I added, “I was afraid you didn’t know.”
My brother reached over and gave my hair a messy, affectionate rub.
As he drove toward an intersection, he spoke again.
“My school is having a group dinner tonight.”
He looked at me. “Should I drop you off at home first to do your homework?”
My brother had already replaced all the servants and nannies at home. Besides, I could speak and read now; no one dared to bully me anymore.
But I was still clingy.
I tugged on his sleeve and said piteously, “I want to go with you.”
His question seemed to have been a mere formality. As soon as the words left my mouth, he spun the steering wheel with one hand and simply said, “Fine.”
The dinner was filled with young men and women my brother’s age.
He pulled out a chair and settled me right next to him.
While casually responding to the others, he spent the meal picking the bones out of my fish.
Quite a few pretty girls took the initiative to be nice to me, but their eyes couldn’t help but drift toward my brother.
On the way back that night, I asked him when he was going to start dating.
“There are clearly so many people who like you,” I said.
My brother gave a half-smile. “If I actually start dating, I won’t have time to keep you company.”
But if he fell in love-if he met someone who truly loved him and whom he truly loved back-would he be spared from falling into a desperate, hopeless love with the female lead later on?
So, I forced myself to be generous. “It’s okay.”
“I hope there’s someone else in this world who truly loves you and treats you well,” I said.
My brother brought the car to a stop at a red light.
He turned his head and looked at me for a long while. “That’s enough.”
“I don’t have the headspace for that right now,” he said.
He gave my cheek a pinch. “And you don’t need to worry about me. Just focus on being your usual annoying self.”
