Chapter 6
Jiang Du went to find Chen Yao.
He said he was going downstairs to buy wontons for me, a ten-minute journey, but now three hours have passed and he hasn’t returned.
I remembered, before he left, I suddenly called out to him, “Any form of betrayal is still betrayal.”
He turned back sharply, his face pale, his smile somewhat bleak.
I said to him again, “Today is our wedding anniversary, I don’t want wontons, can you not go?”
Jiang Du smiled, “Honey, I’ll be back soon.”
How soon is “soon,” really?
It could be ten minutes, or it could be three hours.
During these three hours, Chen Yao has been live-streaming to me what they did.
–She recorded everything.
It’s evidence, and also a knife piercing my heart.
Chen Yao: “When will you divorce her? Do you want our son to be a bastard?”
Jiang Du: “Our son won’t be a bastard.”
Chen Yao’s voice choked with sobs, “Jiang Du, do you love me?”
“Yes.” Without hesitation.
Chen Yao cried even harder, “You told me at first that we were just a transaction, that after having the child, I should leave. Later, you said you loved me and asked me not to leave you.”
There was the sound of clothes rustling, probably Jiang Du pulling her into his arms to comfort her, his voice gentle, “Feelings are not something I can control.”
“Do you still love her?”
Jiang Du was silent for a long time, “She’s been with me for a long time, suffered a lot, I must be responsible for her.”
Responsible.
Just responsible.
The recording ended there.
They bought a cake but didn’t have a lighter, the front desk phone didn’t connect, so Jiang Du went down to get one.
Actually, it’s not surprising, because of my health, Jiang Du never smokes, so naturally, he wouldn’t have a lighter on him.
Suddenly, my phone rang–
Chen Yao sent me the hotel address and room number.
