Chapter 5
“Those old bastards, can’t the company run without me? I don’t care anymore. Today, I’m staying right here with you.”
Jiang Du walked into the hospital room, tossed his endlessly ringing phone aside, reached out to feel my forehead, and only then buried his head in the crook of my neck. “Honey, you scared me to death last night.”
I felt completely drained, barely managing to push him away.
“My body can’t have children. Do you blame me?”
The gentle smile that always lingered in Jiang Du’s eyes vanished completely. His voice was slow and faint, “Why would you ask that?”
He grew solemn. “Su Nan, whether we have children or not, I will always love you.”
I smiled at him, then asked a question that seemed totally unrelated. “Has your dad come to see you?”
Jiang Du was stunned.
Actually, his surname wasn’t always Jiang.
When Jiang Du was a child, life was very hard.
His father died in an accident early on. His mother had no job, liked to gamble, drank heavily, and beat people.
His younger sister had lupus since childhood.
The whole family lived off his father’s pension.
Until five years ago, when Jiang Du’s biological father suddenly showed up.
It was only then that we realized real life was far messier than any TV drama.
Back then, Jiang Du’s adoptive mother had, out of a selfish whim, secretly switched her own son with the son of a wealthy family at the same hospital.
The night he learned the truth, Jiang Du lay on my lap, covering his face with his hand.
“From childhood till now, the way she looked at me never held any affection. On those rare days when she wasn’t drunk, even the only piece of candy she had would go to my sister.”
“Su Nan, in this world, only you truly love me.”
And Jiang Du’s biological father was a very domineering businessman.
After acknowledging his son, the first thing he did was demand that he divorce me.
The reason was that I couldn’t have children.
“Your mother passed away early. All these years, I’ve devoted myself to my business. In the future, the entire Jiang Family will be yours. But she can’t even bear a child–how can she help you with anything?”
Of course, Jiang Du refused. For me, he even cut off all contact with that side.
A year ago, the company’s cash flow ran into trouble, and it nearly had to declare bankruptcy.
But not long after, the company’s problems suddenly disappeared.
Later, I found a text message on his phone:
“You don’t have to divorce, but I want a grandson.”
