Chapter 55
Chapter 55
Chu Suosuo lay on the surgical gurney, her eyes tightly shut and her face pale. Her safety helmet had already been removed.
With her hair covering the area, it was impossible to see the extent of the injury with the naked eye.
When Chu Yanru saw her come out, he dropped everything in his hands and rushed over. He grabbed her hand and cried out, “Suosuo! Suosuo!”
“Excuse me, please make way,” a nurse said, pushing the gurney toward the emergency room.
Chu Yanru hurriedly followed after them.
The results of the brain CT scan would take ten minutes to come out.
Gu Beixian didn’t move; he stayed behind to wait for the results. After all, this matter involved him.
Gu Aoting watched the direction Chu Suosuo had disappeared in and said in a complaining tone, “Look at how good Suosuo is to you. She risked her life to save you. If she hadn’t blocked that for you, you’d be the one lying on that gurney right now.”
Gu Beixian replied indifferently, “I didn’t ask her to block it.”
Anger began to simmer in Gu Aoting’s chest. “What kind of talk is that? You and Suosuo used to be so close. What’s happened to you lately?”
With that, he shot a cold, sideways glance at Su Hua.
The implication was clear: she was the one driving a wedge between them.
Noticing this, Gu Beixian pulled Su Hua to his other side to shield her. His eyes darkened slightly as he said, “Is it wrong for me to keep my distance from women other than my wife? Do I have to have one on each arm for you to be satisfied?”
Gu Aoting choked on his words, his face turning grim.
He wanted to say something but ultimately held back, leaving with a cold snort.
After he left, Gu Beixian reached out and ruffled Su Hua’s hair. Examining her expression, he said, “I’m sorry. I’ve let you suffer these grievances.”
His cool voice carried a hint of guilt.
Su Hua had been fuming after being met with the cold glares of Gu Aoting and Chu Yanru, but hearing Gu Beixian say this, her anger instantly dissipated.
She lightly grasped his fingertips and said, “It’s fine.”
It wasn’t the first time. She had heard much harsher words before. In front of Gu Beixian, Gu Aoting was actually being quite subtle.
Ten minutes later, the results of Chu Suosuo’s brain CT came back: a mild concussion.
Su Hua breathed a secret sigh of relief.
She was truly afraid that Chu Suosuo might have been knocked stupid or ended up in a vegetative state. Given the temperament of that family, they would definitely have clung to Gu Beixian and never let go.
Gu Beixian checked his watch. “It’s getting late. You should head back first. I might be home late tonight.”
Su Hua said reluctantly, “Don’t forget to eat dinner.”
“I know. You too.”
Su Hua turned to leave. At the corner, she ran into Gu Beixian’s assistant and instructed him, “Don’t forget to order dinner for President Gu. Remind him to eat.”
The assistant replied respectfully, “Yes, Young Mistress.”
When Su Hua got home, she washed up and went to bed. She waited until very late, but Gu Beixian still hadn’t returned.
Exhausted, she eventually fell asleep.
She woke up in the middle of the night and opened her eyes to find the other side of the bed empty. Her heart sank.
She looked up at the clock on the wall; it was already past two in the morning.
Gu Beixian wasn’t back yet.
She picked up her phone and dialed his number, but it was turned off.
Su Hua felt a sense of panic, her heart thumping wildly. she was constantly worried that something might happen.
She trusted Gu Beixian, but she couldn’t stand Gu Aoting, Chu Yanru, and that mother-daughter pair. Two old foxes and two schemers-when those four got together, what kind of foul play were they not capable of?
If they pulled some kind of trick and managed to compromise Gu Beixian… would she still want him, or not?
Su Hua threw on some clothes, wanting to go to the hospital to check. However, it was too late; the driver was surely long asleep. It would also be difficult to call a cab at this hour. Her driving skills were average, and it wasn’t very safe to head out alone in the middle of the night.
Su Hua paced back and forth in the bedroom before finally dialing Gu Nanyin’s number.
Dazed with sleep, Gu Nanyin answered without checking the caller ID. She asked irritably, “Who is it? It’s so late, don’t you let people sleep?”
Su Hua said, “Nanyin, it’s me, Su Hua.”
Gu Nanyin’s voice immediately softened. “Oh, sister-in-law. Did something happen?”
“Could you give me Chu Mochen’s phone number? Chu Suosuo was hit by a heavy object. Your brother took her to the hospital and hasn’t come home yet.”
Gu Nanyin was instantly wide awake. “What? Is my brother looking for another beating? How did he end up mixed up with that green tea bitch again?”
“The situation is a bit special this time.”
“Don’t make excuses for him. He’s just asking for it. I’ll send you Mo Chen’s phone number right now.”
“Alright.”
After saving Chu Mochen’s number, Su Hua dialed it.
It was picked up after just one ring.
Su Hua said politely, “I’m sorry to call you so late, Mr. Chu.”
Chu Mochen replied courteously, “It’s no problem. Please, tell me what’s on your mind.”
“I wanted to ask, is Gu Beixian with you?”
Chu Mochen’s tone held a hint of apology. “He is. Just a moment, I’ll hand the phone to him.”
“Thank you.”
Before long, Gu Beixian’s voice came through the phone. “My phone ran out of battery and died. Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
Su Hua gripped the phone and said, “You didn’t come home. I was worried.”
Gu Beixian paused before saying, “Chu Suosuo still hasn’t woken up, so it’s hard for me to leave. Go to sleep; don’t worry about me.”
Su Hua was puzzled. “On the way back, I looked it up on my phone. For a mild concussion, people usually wake up after a few hours of unconsciousness. Why is she in such a serious state?”
“The doctor said the same, but she just won’t wake up. After all, she was injured because of me, and the Gu Family and Chu Family are business partners.”
“Then find a place to catch some sleep when you can. Staying up all night is too hard on your body.”
“Okay.”
After hanging up, Gu Beixian returned the phone to Chu Mochen.
Chu Mochen checked the time on his wrist. “It’s late. Why don’t you head back? You have work tomorrow. There’s no point in everyone staying here.”
Gu Beixian glanced at Chu Suosuo on the hospital bed. “Alright then. I’ll come see her again tomorrow.”
No sooner had the words left his mouth than Hua Qirou shot him a resentful look, saying snidely, “Beixian, Suosuo was injured because of you. It’s simply unacceptable for you to just leave her like this, isn’t it?”
Gu Beixian pursed his lips and didn’t respond.
Chu Mochen pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, shook one out, and handed it to him. “Let’s go out for a smoke to clear our heads.”
Gu Beixian reached out to take it and walked out with him.
They reached the window.
Gu Beixian put the cigarette in his mouth.
Chu Mochen flicked his lighter to light it for him, then patted his shoulder. “When you’re dealing with someone like my stepmother, there’s no reasoning with her. It’s been hard on you.”
Gu Beixian took a deep drag and slowly exhaled a ring of smoke. He stared at the white vapor, his mind wandering slightly.
Whether it was hard or not, it was what it was.
He was mainly afraid that Su Hua would overthink things.
Her calling just now meant she was definitely letting her imagination run wild.
Gu Beixian waited until dawn before leaving. When he left, Chu Suosuo was still unconscious.
That evening.
After finishing his business for the day, Chu Mochen came to the hospital to see Chu Suosuo.
He walked to the ward and was about to push the door open when he heard Chu Suosuo’s irritable voice from inside.
“Dad, how did you arrange those people? They threw that iron bucket down so hard-were they trying to kill me? Even with the safety helmet, I was nearly beaten to death. My head still hurts, I’m nauseous, I want to throw up, and my brain feels all foggy. It’s miserable!”
Chu Mochen froze, his hand pulling back from the doorknob.
He heard Chu Yanru say, “Do you think I wasn’t worried? But the act has to be convincing. This way, Gu Beixian and Gu Aoting will both feel they owe you. Your reconciliation with Beixian is just around the corner.”
Chu Suosuo warned, “Whatever you do, don’t let my brother find out about this. Gu Nanyin has influenced him so much that he’s constantly siding with outsiders.”
Chu Yanru hummed in agreement. “I don’t need you to tell me that.”
Chu Mochen was just about to leave when he heard Chu Suosuo say in a cloying voice, “Dad, haven’t you noticed that my brother’s personality is nothing like ours? You should find some time to get a paternity test done on him. If it turns out he’s not part of our family, we’re just wasting our feelings on him.”
Chu Mochen’s face darkened instantly. He turned and left.
As he reached the ground floor, he ran straight into Gu Beixian.
Chu Mochen said, “Go home. She’s not going to die. Don’t ever come to see her again.”
