Chapter 54
Chapter 54
Su Hua’s lips were pale as she stood there, looking fragile and brittle.
It was clearly a beautiful day in late April, yet she felt as if she were standing in the middle of a frozen wasteland. She was cold from head to toe, her teeth chattering faintly. Her heart clenched, aching so much it was hard to breathe.
He had promised to be a faithful husband. He had promised to keep his distance from Chu Suosuo.
Yet, Gu Beixian had just carried her into the car with such intimacy. He had looked so harried, so frantic. She had been standing right there at the main entrance, impossible to miss, yet he hadn’t even seen her.
“Young Mistress? Young Mistress?” the driver called out twice.
Su Hua didn’t react.
The driver bent down to pick up the phone from the ground, checked it, and handed it to her. “Young Mistress, your phone.”
Su Hua took it mechanically.
The driver carefully observed her expression and said, “Miss Chu must have been injured for President Gu to carry her like that. I saw that her eyes were closed, and she looked like she was in a lot of pain.”
Su Hua’s attention had been entirely on Gu Beixian just now. She hadn’t looked closely at Chu Suosuo, nor did she care to. Hearing the driver’s words, she considered it; perhaps it was possible.
Otherwise, for no reason and in broad daylight, Gu Beixian wouldn’t have carried her into the car so openly in front of so many subordinates.
Panic breeds confusion. She had simply lost her composure.
Once she thought it through, the stiffness in Su Hua’s gaze softened slightly. She said, “Call them and ask which hospital they went to. We’re going there.”
She didn’t want to believe Gu Beixian would lie to her. She wanted to see the truth with her own eyes.
The driver took out his phone and called the people who had followed Gu Beixian one by one, quickly finding out the hospital’s address. Hearing that Chu Suosuo was indeed injured made Su Hua feel a bit better. She got into the car, and the driver took her to the hospital.
By the time she arrived, Chu Suosuo had been wheeled into the examination room for a brain CT scan.
Gu Beixian stood by the window with one hand in his pocket, staring at the door of the examination room with a cold, stern expression. Several people from the construction site who had come with him were standing nearby, speaking in low voices.
Su Hua walked slowly toward Gu Beixian.
As if sensing her presence, Gu Beixian turned his head toward her, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes. He quickly masked his expression and asked softly, “Why are you here?”
Su Hua said quietly, “We had an appointment for dinner. Did you forget?”
“I’m sorry. Something happened-Chu Suosuo got hurt, and I can’t leave just yet.” Gu Beixian reached out and placed his hand on her shoulder, squeezing gently. “If you’re hungry, go back and eat first.”
Su Hua shook her head. “I’m not hungry. What happened to her?”
“She was representing the Chu Group on a site inspection with me. An iron bucket fell off the scaffolding and hit her on the head.”
Gu Beixian had mentioned this before-that Chu Suosuo had taken a position as her father’s assistant. The Chu Group and the Gu Group collaborated on many projects. It was clearly the intention of Chu Yanru and Gu Aoting to deliberately create opportunities for Chu Suosuo and Gu Beixian.
Su Hua suppressed her emotions and asked, “Wasn’t she wearing a safety helmet?”
“She was.”
“Is it serious?”
“She’s unconscious. We won’t know the specifics until the test results are out.” Gu Beixian checked his watch and said, “My father and the others will be here soon. You should head back first.”
Su Hua knew he was afraid Gu Aoting would make things difficult for her if he saw her. She didn’t want to see Gu Aoting’s cold, coffin-like face either, so she said, “Then come home early.”
“I will.” Gu Beixian squeezed her fingertips and noticed they were ice-cold. He paused, then patted her head, his voice softening. “Don’t overthink things. Since I’ve chosen to move forward with you, I won’t have any improper entanglements with Chu Suosuo. Today was an exceptional circumstance.”
Su Hua nodded, her beautiful, autumn-water eyes gazing at him with a damp, clear brilliance. “I believe you.”
Gu Beixian’s lips curved upward.
For a fleeting moment, he wanted to pull her into his arms.
However, with his subordinates present, he ultimately restrained himself.
He took her hand, enveloping it within his own palm to keep it warm. “Call me when you get home,” he said. “Tell Aunt Liu to make whatever you feel like eating. When I have some free time, I’ll take you out for dinner.”
Su Hua replied, “Alright.”
“Go on, then.” He released her hand.
“Mm.”
Su Hua turned to leave, but her expression suddenly hardened. She saw Gu Aoting and Chu Yanru rushing toward them, looking frantic.
Even from a distance, Gu Aoting’s sharp gaze lashed across her face with icy coldness.
That look was like a jagged icicle, stabbing violently into her heart.
It pierced so deep that Su Hua felt a bone-chilling cold.
Chu Yanru’s gaze was even more like a sharp blade, slicing back and forth across her face.
It made her feel extremely uncomfortable.
Some people possessed a certain talent: even without saying a word, they could leave a person covered in wounds with just a look.
Su Hua was so distressed that she felt a sudden urge to laugh.
Two old men, whose combined ages exceeded a hundred years, were bullying a young woman in her early twenties like this.
They both had children of their own-what kind of hearts did they have?
Su Hua had intended to leave, but now she suddenly didn’t want to.
She wanted to see exactly what these two old men intended to do to her.
Seeing her standing still, Gu Beixian pulled her behind him, shielding her.
Gu Aoting stepped forward and looked at Gu Beixian with a cold face, his tone carrying blatant reproach. “You promised me you would take good care of Suosuo. Is this how you take care of her?”
Gu Beixian’s eyes darkened slightly. “It was an accident.”
Gu Aoting let out a cold snort. “The reason I asked you to look after Suosuo was specifically to prevent such accidents!”
Gu Beixian did not respond.
He tilted his head slightly toward Chu Yanru and said with polite detachment, “Uncle Chu, please have your company send a more professional assistant to coordinate with me on work matters in the future.”
Chu Yanru’s expression instantly turned unsightly.
He gave a fake smile. “Beixian, those words of yours… your Uncle Chu doesn’t particularly like hearing them. I heard from the people at the construction site that the iron bucket was supposed to hit you on the head. Suosuo pushed you out of the way and took the hit for you. She was injured because she was trying to save you; a person ought to have a conscience.”
Gu Beixian remained silent for a moment. “I will take responsibility for her injury, but I must also ask Uncle Chu to replace her. Suosuo studied jewelry design abroad; she isn’t suited for the real estate industry.”
Chu Yanru gave a half-smile. “That’s exactly why I wanted you to mentor her. You two have known each other since you were kids, so it’s easier for you to communicate.”
Gu Beixian’s handsome face remained calm, but his eyes were dark and profound.
His gaze was devoid of emotion, yet it radiated a distinct chill.
Gu Aoting caught that chill.
He glanced at Su Hua and reminded Gu Beixian indifferently, “Previously, you requested that I stop making things difficult for Su Hua. In exchange, you were to take good care of Suosuo at work. I kept my end of the bargain, but how have you kept yours? It’s only been a few days, and you’ve already looked after Suosuo right into a hospital bed.”
Su Hua thought to herself: This old fox is truly cunning.
He had stopped targeting her directly and instead started pressuring Gu Beixian.
In short, he was using every possible means to tear them apart.
She gently tugged at the corner of Gu Beixian’s suit jacket, wanting to say something.
Gu Beixian stopped her with a look.
He looked down at Gu Aoting and Chu Yanru, his expression cold and aloof. “Forced fruits are never sweet. Continuing like this is meaningless; it will only deepen the feelings between Su Hua and me.”
Just as he finished speaking, Chu Suosuo was hurriedly wheeled out of the examination room by a nurse.
