Chapter 56
Chapter 56
Gu Beixian’s eyes darkened slightly as he asked, “Your sister is awake?”
Chu Mochen grew angry just thinking about what Chu Suosuo had said. “She’s been awake for a while. She’s quite sharp-tongued-not at all like someone who just woke up from a night-long coma.”
Sensing the hidden meaning in his words, Gu Beixian asked, “What happened?”
Chu Mochen didn’t explain directly, only saying, “You should have someone look into that worker who threw the iron bucket down at the construction site yesterday. It might come in handy later.”
Gu Beixian keenly caught the word “threw.”
Connecting this with the reactions of Chu Yanru, Hua Qirou, and the others last night, he began to understand what was going on.
“Thanks,” he said, turning to leave.
Once in the car, he called his assistant and instructed, “Investigate the worker who ‘threw’ the iron bucket at the construction site yesterday afternoon. Go yourself, keep it discreet, and don’t let anyone know. I’ll have a use for him later.”
He deliberately emphasized the word “threw.”
His assistant had been with him for a long time. Hearing that emphasis, he immediately grasped the implication.
He responded at once, “Understood, President Gu. I’ll get right on it.”
Gu Beixian gave a low grunt of affirmation, hung up, and told the driver, “To the office.”
The driver started the car.
As the car turned a corner, he received a call from Hua Qirou. “Beixian, your father said you came to the hospital, but why haven’t I seen you? Suosuo just woke up and has been calling your name. Her head injury has left her a bit dazed, but no matter who she forgets, she hasn’t forgotten you.”
If he had heard this ten minutes ago, Gu Beixian might have felt guilty.
But now, it only felt fake.
A group of people had set a trap, working together to put on a show and manipulate him.
They had certainly gone to great lengths.
Gu Beixian spoke without emotion. “Something came up on my end that needs my urgent attention. I’m relieved to know Suosuo has all of you to look after her.”
“But…”
“I’m going to be busy.” Gu Beixian cut the call.
A few minutes later, Gu Aoting called, his tone questioning. “Beixian, what’s wrong with you? Suosuo was injured because of you, and the Gu Family and Chu Family are business partners. Whether for personal or professional reasons, you should be there to keep her company.”
Gu Beixian’s expression suddenly turned cold.
He didn’t know if his father was involved in this scheme.
Regardless of whether he was or not, he was an accomplice.
Gu Beixian’s voice was cool and indifferent. “I stayed in her hospital room all last night without sleep, and I’ve been busy at the office all day. I’m a human being, not made of iron. I’m not the only person in the company. Since you’re so worried about her, go and keep her company yourself. I’m exhausted; I’m going home to sleep.”
Without waiting for a reply, he hung up.
Soon, Gu Aoting called again.
Gu Beixian glanced at the screen, turned the phone off, and tossed it onto the seat. He raised a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose and told the driver, “Take me home.”
“Yes, President Gu.”
Back at Riyue Bay, the moment Gu Beixian walked through the door, Su Hua came to meet him, silently helping him loosen his tie.
Her large eyes darted around, scanning his clothes up and down.
Gu Beixian had been feeling quite irritable after being targeted by the Chu Family’s scheme, but seeing her like this, he suddenly smiled.
She was usually so gentle and composed; seeing this occasional quirky, clever side of her was truly adorable.
He reached out to stroke her head and said tenderly, “No need to look. When I left the hospital this morning, Chu Suosuo wasn’t awake yet. This afternoon, my father told me to see her, but I left before even entering the room. I wasn’t hugged by her, I don’t have her scent on me, and I certainly didn’t give her a chance to kiss me.”
Having her little thoughts exposed, Su Hua’s face flushed. She argued stubbornly, “I wasn’t doing that. I just saw you were tired and wanted to help you with your tie.”
Faint smile lines appeared at the corners of Gu Beixian’s eyes.
He liked the way Su Hua got jealous and cared about him, yet he didn’t want her to be sad because of it. It was a contradiction.
He took off his suit jacket.
Su Hua took it and hung it on the rack, asking, “Is Chu Suosuo awake?”
Gu Beixian’s brow furrowed imperceptibly. “She is.”
Su Hua looked into his eyes and asked nonchalantly, “Are you going to see her tonight then?”
Gu Beixian paused, then reached out to pull her into his arms, planting a light, butterfly kiss on her forehead. “I’m not going.”
“What about tomorrow?”
“Not tomorrow either.” He lowered his head to kiss her cheek, then trailed down to her lips and neck, finally nibbling on her earlobe. He kissed and bit gently, murmuring casually, “I’m not going anymore. Accompanying my wife is what matters. In my world, my wife is the most important person.”
Su Hua’s ears turned red. His kisses sent sparks flying through her heart, leaving her whole body feeling tingly and weak.
She thought to herself that this man was getting better and better at this.
Originally, she had been quite upset that he hadn’t come home all night. Yet, with just a few words, he had managed to coax her halfway out of her mood. He really had her wrapped around his finger.
Perhaps that was just how it was when you loved someone.
In love, the person who cares more is always the loser. It was as if he only had to stand there, doing nothing, to pierce through her heart. If he gave her a kiss, she would forget many of her grievances.
Three days later.
Grandmother called and asked Su Hua and Gu Beixian to come over for dinner on Saturday.
Su Hua hadn’t seen Grandmother since returning from her maternal grandmother’s funeral and missed her dearly, so she agreed immediately.
When Saturday arrived, she had the driver drop her off early, before it even got dark.
Her mood this time was worlds apart from her last visit. Last time, she had come to say goodbye to Grandmother because of the divorce, and her heart had been incredibly heavy. This time, she felt significantly more relaxed.
As soon as Grandmother saw her, she waddled over to welcome her, clutching her hand and refusing to let go. It was as if she had found a long-lost treasure. “Who is this? Let Grandmother have a look. Whose young lady is this? How can she be so beautiful?”
Su Hua gave a sweet smile and mimicked her tone. “It’s your precious granddaughter-in-law.”
Grandmother cupped Su Hua’s small face with both hands, rubbing and squeezing it as if she couldn’t get enough. “Oh, my precious granddaughter-in-law, you’re finally back. When you left last time, it broke my heart.”
The old master walked out smoking a pipe and added, “It’s true. After you left, your grandmother couldn’t eat for days. She couldn’t sleep at night and kept sighing, saying our Gu Family had done you wrong.”
Su Hua felt a pang in her heart and choked up. “I’m sorry, Grandmother.”
“It’s not your fault, not your fault at all. It’s all the fault of that bratty grandson of mine and my bastard son.” The old lady pulled her over to sit on the sofa.
Su Hua’s eyes had been red with emotion, but hearing Grandmother say that, she almost burst out laughing. Only Grandmother would dare to speak like that. If it were anyone else, would they even dare try?
Gu Beixian arrived half an hour later.
The old lady had the servants bring the dishes to the table. The four of them sat around the table, eating and chatting happily.
The old lady placed a piece of braised sea cucumber into Su Hua’s bowl. “Eat more sea cucumber. This is pure, natural, and pollution-free. Eating it boosts your immunity and makes it easier to conceive, so you can give me a big, healthy great-grandson.”
Su Hua felt a bit embarrassed and stole a glance at Gu Beixian.
Gu Beixian reached out under the table to hold her hand, his thumb lightly stroking her palm. That touch was numbing and tingling, like an electric current. The sensation left Su Hua’s heart fluttering.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
A servant hurried over to open it. Su Hua turned her head and saw Gu Aoting walking in with Chu Suosuo.
Chu Suosuo was dressed fashionably and exquisitely, but her face was somewhat pale and she wore no lipstick, looking as if she were just recovering from a serious illness.
The smile on Su Hua’s face froze. Not just her, but the other three people at the table also looked displeased.
Grandmother’s eyes widened as she angrily questioned Gu Aoting, “We were having a nice family dinner. Why did you bring an outsider to join the commotion? Are you trying to upset me on purpose?”
Chu Suosuo looked aggrieved and timidly shrank behind Gu Aoting, looking like she was seeking protection.
Gu Aoting’s expression was dark as he said, “Mom, Suosuo just saved Beixian not long ago. Don’t always treat her like an enemy. You used to dote on her so much. This child hasn’t had it easy either. Back then, her mother forced her to go abroad, tearing her and Beixian apart, which caused her to suffer from severe depression.”
Grandmother let out a cold snort and rolled her eyes without saying a word.
Gu Aoting turned to Chu Suosuo and said, “Suosuo, go ahead and sit down to eat.”
Chu Suosuo said obediently, “Okay, Uncle Gu.”
The two of them sat down opposite Su Hua and Gu Beixian.
Chu Suosuo picked up the serving chopsticks, grabbed a piece of steamed abalone, stood up, and reached across the table to place it in Gu Beixian’s bowl. With a charming and somewhat fawning expression, she said, “Beixian, you stayed up all night taking care of me the night I was injured. It must have been hard on you. Eat more abalone to nourish yourself.”
Gu Beixian looked at her with cold, indifferent eyes. “Has your injury recovered?”
Chu Suosuo raised her hand to rub her temples, her expression pained. “My head still throbs slightly, and there are some things I can’t remember very clearly.”
Gu Beixian gave her a meaningful look, then picked up his phone and dialed his assistant. He said calmly, “Bring that worker to the old residence.”
Upon hearing this, Chu Suosuo’s face instantly turned deathly pale.
