An Unexpected Answer.

I fell silent, but I felt that what he said made a lot of sense.

People are always searching for meaning, but in this world, not everything has meaning.

Sometimes, you just think of something, and then you do it.

Pei Su looked at my dazed expression and gently lifted the corners of his lips.

“Yuniang, is there something you want?”

“Me?” I paused, feeling lost for a moment, then shook my head. “No.”

By the Lord’s side, whatever the Lord wants is what I want.

Whatever the Lord wishes to do is what I wish to do.

I don’t know what ‘self’ is.

It seems that, to me, nothing really matters.

I’m just a weapon, only needing to act according to the Lord’s orders, without thinking too much.

What does it feel like to want something?

A bit curious, I looked up and asked Pei Su, “How did you find what you wanted?”

The night wind stirred his pale green headband. He let out a breath, his smile scattering in the cool breeze.

“Let me tell you a story.”

“Hm?”

“When I was young, I fled from disaster with my younger siblings, and unfortunately, we were caught in the chaos of war.”

His voice was like a stream, flowing gently in the narrow carriage.

“Cannons roared, and we had nowhere to run. Just as we were in despair, a young girl suddenly appeared and saved me and my family. She herself was just a child.”

I held my breath, stunned.

Pei Su seemed lost in memory, but continued his story softly.

“She took my family to a safe place, and when she came back to save me, in her haste to keep me from harm, she covered my ears.”

He paused, gazing at me with great tenderness. “She was truly strong. So I thought, I want to become someone strong too, someone who can protect others. All these years, I’ve wanted to see her again. For that wish, I’ve taken one step after another to get to where I am today. Because I want to stand before her again and say one thing.”

I curled my fingers, trying to hide a tremor I couldn’t explain.

“What do you want to say to her?”

Pei Su’s eyes were clear.

“Thank you.”
