Vulgar Love - Chapter 7
The last time I received a call from Gu Shaoheng was before my wedding.
Shared values, gentle and elegant, standing by each other-everyone envied us as a match made in heaven.
Gu Shaoheng congratulated me over the phone.
I replied graciously, “Thank you.”
He was silent for a moment before asking, “I’ve always wanted to know, Suiran, when you agreed to be with me back then, was it just a moment of being moved, or did you ever… did you ever like me?”
I sighed; it seems I often sigh because of him. “I’m someone with clear goals, Gu Shaoheng. I never waste time on things that have no outcome, and I wouldn’t agree to be with someone just because I was moved.”
“I know you so well. Even before we were together, I understood we weren’t headed down the same path. But at that time, I still wanted to see how far we could go together. Don’t ask me again if I liked you. Knowing it was impossible but still trying-that was my greatest respect for you.”
How could I have never been moved? When he joked without caring about getting dirty while helping me carry the water tank, when he gazed at me gently under the moonlight, when I was pulled from the ruins and saw him appear like a heavenly soldier…
But he never learned to be devoted, and I was always too clear-headed, so this road was destined to end halfway.
He and I were like an extra question on a test whose premise I knew was wrong, yet I still tried to see if I could find the right answer under that flawed premise.
I did my best, so I can let go with ease and grace.
His voice on the other end grew quieter and quieter. “I missed my chance, didn’t I?”
I didn’t answer. His voice forced a bit of laughter as he said, “Then, one last thing: I wish you happiness, Suiran. I wish you happiness every year.”
I smiled, replying politely and distantly, “You too.”
“Gu Shaoheng, I wish you happiness every year as well.”
