Vows in Vain, Ten Years, One Betrayal - Chapter 4
When the medical examination results came out, I let out a deep sigh of relief.
My body was still clean.
And I wasn’t pregnant.
When I married Zhou Xuyan, my health was in poor condition.
So we had never tried for a child.
But just to be sure, I went through a thorough check-up.
“Doctor, I’d like to ask, how is my recovery progressing now?”
Only after receiving a positive answer did I feel the heavy weight in my chest begin to lift.
Clutching the report in my hand, I walked out. Just as I reached the corner of the corridor, I happened to hear Zhou Xuyan’s name.
“Zhou Xuyan, if I’m really pregnant, can I keep it?”
I stopped in my tracks and looked at the two people not far away.
Zhou Xuyan held a cigarette between his fingers, his brows furrowed, looking a bit impatient.
The young girl standing before him had a pale face streaked with tears. She was tugging at his sleeve, shaking it as she pleaded.
Zhou Xuyan sneered, “My wife hasn’t even given birth yet. What makes you think it’s your turn?”
“But this is my first baby. I can’t bear to lose it.”
“I promise I’ll be good. I won’t cause you any trouble.”
“And I’ll make sure your wife never finds out about me or the baby.”
Zhou Xuyan tapped her face lightly with the hand holding the cigarette.
“Don’t be naive, sweetheart. There’s no way you’re keeping this child.”
“Be a good girl. Get rid of it, and I’ll buy you an apartment.”
“But if you don’t, Tao Yuan, let me make myself clear.”
“There are plenty of pretty, obedient girls in your college. I could sleep with a different one every day if I wanted to. You’re not irreplaceable.”
The young girl was stunned by his words. Tears still clung to her face, but her complexion turned ashen.
“I’ll be good, Zhou Xuyan. Please don’t abandon me.”
“Good girl. Go get the check-up.”
“I’ll go for the check-up, I promise. But… you said before that your wife’s health is poor and she can’t have children.”
“If I’m really pregnant, just think of it as having the baby for her. She can raise it, and I won’t fight or compete with her. Would that be okay?”
Zhou Xuyan was silent for a moment. “Go for the check-up first. We’ll talk after that.”
The young girl sniffled as she pushed the door open and went inside.
Zhou Xuyan finished his cigarette and stubbed it out.
When he turned around, I pretended to have just walked over.
When he saw me, he seemed momentarily startled.
But he quickly replaced his expression with one of concern and worry.
“Honey, why are you here at the hospital?”
“Are you feeling unwell, or did you get hurt somewhere?”
