That day, when Zhou Xuyan came home, I was already downstairs having breakfast.

He rushed in, carrying a large bouquet of flowers and a gift.

His face was full of guilt and remorse. “I’m so sorry, honey. Last night, the social engagement ran too late, and I couldn’t make it back.”

When we got married, he had promised that no matter how busy he was, he would never stay out all night.

But in the past six months, he had been coming home later and later.

This time, he hadn’t come home at all.

I put down my chopsticks and looked up at him.

His suit, shirt, and tie had all been changed.

The scent on him was clean and crisp.

He had gone to great lengths to make everything seem proper.

He set the bouquet down and walked over, leaning in to kiss me. “I swear, this is the first time, and it will also be the last.”

But I raised my hand to stop him and asked, word by word.

“Did you stay at the office last night?”

Zhou Xuyan didn’t hesitate for even a moment. “Yes, you can see that the clothes I changed into are the ones you prepared for me.”

After saying that, he held my shoulders, looking at me cautiously.

“Honey, are you mad?”

“I’ll spend the whole day with you today. I won’t go to the office, okay?”

I looked at him too, at the reflection of myself in his pupils.

His gaze didn’t waver, didn’t flinch, and showed no trace of guilt.

And yet, I managed to hide my heartbreak completely.

“No.”

I pushed his hand away. “Go ahead and eat.”

But just as he sat down, his phone rang.

I saw him frown and decline the call.

But soon, it rang again for the second time.

He hesitated for a few seconds but still declined it.

Immediately after, a message came through.

As Zhou Xuyan read it, his brows furrowed deeply.

“Bihan, there’s something urgent at the office…”

“Go ahead.”

“No, I’ll have Lin Yue handle it first. I promised to spend the whole day with you.” He said this, but his face betrayed his restless mind.

“It’s fine. Work is more important. Go quickly.”

I looked at him calmly, the pain in my heart already numb.

Zhou Xuyan hesitated for only a moment before standing up. “I’ll try to come back as soon as I can to be with you.”

I gave a soft “Mm,” watching as he hurriedly got into his car and drove off.

Only then did I realize, belatedly, to wipe away the cold tears on my face.

I called my best friend. “Zhenzhen, can you help me book a health check-up at your hospital for today?”
