Chapter 1
“I’m coming.”
This voice, which says goodnight and loves me every day, I wouldn’t mistake it.
In the descending elevator, I was still defending Jackson, thinking it might just be a coincidence of the same name.
Reality slapped me in the face.
I wanted to retain a shred of dignity, but my legs were nailed to the ground, unable to move.
The door opened, and Jackson appeared with a towel wrapped around his waist, his bare chest showing traces of red marks.
It was clear that the affair was quite intense.
The bag in my hand rolled to the ground, several boxes of condoms spilling out.
If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have known that this man, who was indifferent to intimacy with me, could put so much effort into another woman.
Jackson’s eyes were a mix of emotions: shock, panic, and a hint of relief.
I never thought he would cheat, didn’t even know where to start questioning, and after a long pause, I finally uttered:
“How long?”
Jackson pursed his lips, his expression indifferent:
“Three years.”
My eyes widened instantly, three years? The owner of this floor moved in three years ago.
Which means they’ve been coming and going under my nose for so long, and I’ve been foolishly kept in the dark.
No, I should have known.
Three years ago, when the owner moved in, she came up to greet me.
The woman was named Ava, very pretty, but a bit spoiled.
“This house was a gift from my boyfriend, he said he wanted me closer to him to enhance our relationship.”
“From now on, we’ll be living upstairs and downstairs. My boyfriend and I aren’t very restrained in that aspect, sometimes we make a lot of noise, I hope you can bear with us.”
At the time, I didn’t catch the underlying meaning in her words.
In my view, Jackson loved me so much, everything we’ve been through was proof, how could he betray me?
My heart felt like it was being pierced by a ruthless blade, I was suffocating from the pain, just wanting to escape the scene.
“Isabella, some things aren’t what you think.”
Jackson chased after me, his voice a bit helpless, lacking the guilt of being caught, more like blaming me for being unreasonable.
I saw it with my own eyes, could it still be false?
Before I could say anything else, Ava’s voice came from the room:
“Honey, why are you so slow? I’ve been waiting impatiently, there’s so little time, soon you’ll have to go back to that ugly woman.”
She was wearing a black lace slip dress, leaning against the door, meeting my gaze with a face full of provocation.
The alarm on my phone rang, nine o’clock in the evening, the time Jackson returned home every day.
Married for five years, he was always home at this time.
After entering, he would kiss my forehead and then watch TV with me.
His free time was all mine, how did he have time to cheat?
Fragments flashed through my mind.
I remembered a few times in the elevator when Ava would subtly flaunt the marks on her neck to me.
“He just loves me too much, doesn’t know how to restrain himself, I hope it didn’t disturb you? He can only be with me during that time, later he has other things to leave for.”
I didn’t understand why she would say these things to me, just shook my head.
They usually made noise from six to eight in the evening, I hadn’t gone to bed yet, so it didn’t count as disturbing.
Now I finally understood why it was from six to eight.
For three years, he had rationally allocated his time, deceiving me completely.
Keeping me immersed in the dream that he loved me.
My body trembled, I could barely stand.
Seeing this, Jackson tried to support me, but I pushed him away.
“Get away, you disgust me!”
Tears couldn’t be stopped anymore, I ran home, memories of the past flashing continuously.
I couldn’t understand why Jackson would cheat.
