The Little Spoiled Brat Divorces with a Child, Driving the Big Boss Crazy - Chapter 74
Chapter 74
The bastard wasn’t bluffing. When the construction workers arrived, property management came with them.
“Miss Lu,” the manager said awkwardly, “you truly can’t raise the wall… Look, the entire community has a uniform design…”
Jin Beizhou leaned comfortably on top of the wall. “Exactly.”
The tape measure in Lu Ying’s hand flew toward him.
Jin Beizhou caught it neatly.
“The man next door is always hanging over the wall and spying on my home,” Lu Ying enunciated. “I’m a single pregnant woman. I’m afraid. What do you suggest I do?”
The manager scratched his head frantically. What could he do? He had no idea either!!!!
“H-he wouldn’t do that, would he?”
The moment the words left his mouth, Lu Ying suddenly frowned. One hand covered her lower abdomen, and she looked as though she were in pain.
In an instant, the man who had been behaving himself next door planted both hands atop the wall and vaulted over. “Does your belly hurt?”
Lu Ying straightened. Every trace of pain vanished. “You saw that, didn’t you?”
The manager was speechless.
So was Jin Beizhou.
Lu Ying said calmly, “This makes me feel extremely unsafe. My personal security isn’t protected at all.”
The manager wanted to cry, but raising the wall truly was an illegal modification.
“Also, he’s standing in my courtyard right now,” Lu Ying continued. “Can I file a complaint against him and call the police to have him arrested?”
“…”
After a long standoff, the manager finally decided to go back and call a meeting to discuss the issue with all the homeowners. He reassured her, “We can make an exception for special circumstances. If it’s removed immediately after you give birth, I’m sure the other owners won’t object…”
Jin Beizhou sneered. “I object.”
“…”
Silence.
On the verge of tears, the manager said, “I’ll resign as soon as I get back.”
Lu Ying hated making trouble for other people. Seeing how badly the matter had affected him, she spun around and glared at the person who had caused it. “Get back to your own house!”
Jin Beizhou seemed to hum under his breath, then moved to vault back over the wall.
Lu Ying shouted, “Use the gate!!”
“…”
Fine. He’d walk through the gate. Why was she so fierce?
“If the baby startles easily and has a fiery temper, it takes after you,” Jin Beizhou said weakly. “Don’t blame me later…”
Lu Ying immediately raised a hand to slap him.
Jin Beizhou’s long legs moved quickly. He coaxed, “I’m going, I’m going. Why are you like a little land mine?”
He even thoughtfully escorted the workers out for her.
Still furious, Lu Ying asked the manager, “Can I put broken glass along the top of the wall?”
The manager fell silent.
After a moment, he answered vaguely, “Do it quietly. Don’t make it too obvious, and I’ll pretend I don’t know.”
In practice, however, the plan wasn’t very workable because the “owner” who shared the wall with her refused to agree.
At the sight of the man’s infuriating expression, Lu Ying turned and went inside.
Who the fuck wanted to waste time arguing with him here?
Fortunately, Caotang consisted of attached row houses. Even if she avoided the front courtyard, she could still move around indoors. At worst, she could climb the stairs. The space was only a little smaller. She could tolerate that.
Auntie Zhang came inside twice. Both times, she muttered that the property next door seemed extremely busy. People in suits were coming and going, probably reporting to Jin Beizhou about work.
Lu Ying turned a deaf ear.
The weather changed that evening. By dinnertime, a torrential downpour began.
Auntie Zhang exclaimed, “Oh! I forgot to close the greenhouse roof. The seedlings inside will be ruined.”
Lu Ying was in no condition to go outside. Auntie Zhang opened an umbrella, only for the wind to flip it inside out the moment she stepped beyond the entryway.
Rain poured down in sheets.
Auntie Zhang steadied the umbrella. In the dim light filtering through the storm, she saw a man standing in the rain as he shut the greenhouse’s final skylight.
The man’s lean figure resembled Satan in the darkness. After confirming everything in the courtyard was secure, he prepared to climb over the wall and return next door.
As he scaled the wall, he glanced back.
Auntie Zhang stared at him in astonishment. If Lu Ying found out, she would certainly explode again.
Soaked to the skin, the man grinned at her and gestured with one hand: Go back inside.
Auntie Zhang shook her head and sighed, unable to understand how this couple had reached their current state.
The days seemed capable of passing slowly in this delicate state of mutual deadlock and restraint.
After the Labor Day holiday ended, Lu Ying had rested enough, and the sluggishness in her body improved considerably. It happened to be time for a prenatal checkup, so she planned to stroll to the hospital on her own.
Unsurprisingly, the moment she walked out, the watchdog next door who monitored her every day followed.
It was only May, and Lu Ying still wore a jacket. Jin Beizhou was already dressed for summer.
“Don’t follow me.” Lu Ying didn’t explode. She simply continued walking calmly.
Jin Beizhou removed his baseball cap and gently placed it on her head, adjusting its position.
He cupped the back of her head as though holding a ball. It looked as if he were steadying her while she walked, but also as if he were preventing her from removing the cap.
In the past, this domineering yet intimate gesture would have made Lu Ying’s heart pound. Now, she only wanted him to disappear.
Sunlight fell across her face. Lu Ying looked up. “You probably know already. At first, I didn’t intend to keep this baby.”
Jin Beizhou’s hand paused.
Lu Ying continued, “I needed many reasons to convince myself to keep it. But now, I regret that decision again.”
“…” Jin Beizhou’s hand slowly dropped. “Am I truly that terrible?”
“We aren’t right for each other,” Lu Ying said earnestly. “Second Brother, go live your own life. You’ll discover that without Lu Ying, everything becomes much easier…”
Jin Beizhou cut her off. “Don’t decide how I feel on my behalf.”
“And that proves my point.” Lu Ying seized on the opening. “I can’t give you what you want either. We’re always arguing and misunderstanding each other’s good intentions.”
The corner of Jin Beizhou’s mouth lifted. “Given your current attitude, do you think I believe you’ll actually give me visitation rights?”
She didn’t even want to let him see her. Would she truly let him visit their child?
Did this girl have any credibility left?
Lu Ying felt tired and braced a hand against her lower back. “What do you want?”
Before she finished, the man’s tall back bent. By reflex, he wrapped an arm around her waist.
Lu Ying was speechless.
“Half the baby belongs to me,” Jin Beizhou said, lowering his lashes. “I have to take responsibility for your pregnancy and postpartum recovery, as well as the baby’s upbringing in the future…”
Lu Ying became anxious. He had included pregnancy, postpartum, and the entire future.
How was this any different from remarrying? Wasn’t that exactly what he meant?
Lu Ying said, “If the baby can’t belong to me, I’ll abort it immediately…”
Before she could finish, the man’s dry, warm palm covered her mouth.
Jin Beizhou’s eyes were bloodshot, his grief impossible to hide. In a low voice, he begged her again and again. “Don’t say that. I’m begging you. The baby can hear. I only wanted to accompany you to the checkup. I wasn’t planning to do anything else.”
With red-rimmed eyes, he humbled himself into the dust. “I’ll only accompany you to the checkup. I’ll agree to everything else and obey you.”
Lu Ying showed no mercy. “Move away.”
“…All right.”
“Stop monitoring me.”
“All right.”
“The baby will have the surname Lu.”
“…” Jin Beizhou looked at her. “I never planned to fight you over that.”
He only wanted to protect her safety and the baby’s health. Could she truly not see that?
