Chapter 2
Shao Rubai truly had amnesia. His memory seemed to be stuck three years ago, when we had only met a few times and weren’t even friends. Now, he treated me like a regular employee, ordering me around and criticizing the food I ordered for him.
“I’m allergic to peanuts. As my special assistant, don’t you even know that?”
Shao Rubai sat in his hospital bed, slamming his chopsticks onto the table with a stern face. I bowed my head repeatedly, apologizing, secretly thinking, Why don’t you just fire me already?
Shao Rubai’s good friend, Shi Song, arrived late. He was wearing a flashy Hawaiian shirt, and his upturned eyes glanced at me, cowering in the corner, before he casually sat down by the bed.
“Did your sister-in-law upset you? Even so, you still need to eat.”
“Who’s your sister-in-law?” Shao Rubai raised an eyebrow, looking at Shi Song, then at me.
“Isn’t she your girlfriend?” Shi Song pointed at me in surprise. “You two…”
“I’m not like you, getting entangled with every woman who appears,” Shao Rubai scoffed, rubbing his forehead, completely disregarding my feelings as an eavesdropper. “She’s just my assistant. When did my taste get so bad that I’d choose someone so foolish to be my girlfriend?”
Me: “…”
They all said Shao Rubai was a gentle and refined gentleman, but in private, he was a sharp-tongued and petty man!
“Then I’ll take back what I said,” Shi Song shrugged exaggeratedly, glancing at me again. “I actually like foolish women.”
I had only heard Shi Song’s name from Shao Rubai and had never met him. He didn’t recognize me either and mistook me for a gold-digger scheming for wealth. He walked up to me and asked for my number. I was about to refuse when Shao Rubai suddenly spoke, “I think I do have a girlfriend, but I don’t remember her details. Shi Song, can you help me find her?”
“Orders received.” Shi Song grinned, then looked into my eyes and said, word by word, “I will personally bring your runaway girlfriend right to you.”
My expression at the time must have been so tense and blank that I just watched as Shi Song took my phone and entered his number.
Chen Panqing was my neighbor across the hall. She was sweet-looking and lively, and she greatly envied me for having a rich and handsome boyfriend like Shao Rubai. Even when I told her about Shao Rubai’s terrible personality, she would clasp her hands to her face, romantically responding, “That’s just how he shows he loves you! You’re truly blessed and don’t even know it.” She even said, “If I were you, I’d rather stay by Shao Rubai’s side and be his pampered little wife.” I actually knew she had a crush on Shao Rubai and had tried to flirt with him behind my back, but she hadn’t succeeded.
“Then,” I called Chen Panqing from the hospital entrance, “do you still want to be Shao Rubai’s girlfriend?”
