The Fake Heiress Used Me to Test Her Fiance, but I Became the Tycoon's Wife—and She Regretted It - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
After I was brought back to the wealthy Meng family, the fake heiress, Meng Xuening, took me and her fiancé on ninety-nine dates.
Each time, in tears, she would say, “She should have been your fiancée. I’m just an impostor.”
She would brazenly lock me and Lu Yanxiu in the same room, and even deliberately pass on to me the gifts he had given her.
She even made me wear the same dress as hers to test him.
And every single time, Lu Yanxiu chose her without hesitation.
Drunk on his favor, Meng Xuening grew more and more emboldened.
Until the last time, when she demanded that Lu Yanxiu propose to her in a live broadcast watched by hundreds of millions of netizens.
Under that blazing spotlight, Meng Xuening once again declared herself unworthy and, that very night, bought a plane ticket and flew to Paris.
“Lu Yanxiu, she is the one who should be your fiancée.”
She thought this time would be just like all the times before.
But Lu Yanxiu looked at the hundreds of millions of viewers in the livestream, and at the cousins behind him who were waiting to laugh at his expense, and wearily rubbed his brow.
“Meng Jianxi, will you marry me?”
I smiled and slipped onto my finger the ten-carat pink diamond that had originally belonged to Meng Xuening, and before the blessings of the guests and the elders, became Lu Yanxiu’s fiancée.
Once the guests were seen off and only the two of us remained, Lu Yanxiu stared at the string of red exclamation marks on his phone and rubbed his brow.
“Jianxi, I’m sorry. If you ever meet someone you truly care for, you can come to me at any time to call off the engagement.”
“The Lu family will give you a reasonable settlement then. For now, we may have to attend some banquets together. I’m sorry to trouble you.”
Because of Xuening’s ‘humility,’ Lu Yanxiu had already lost face dozens of times, and the elders of the Lu family had long since taken issue with him.
If it weren’t for me, Lu Yanxiu and the Lu family would likely have become the laughingstock of the entire circle today.
I nodded gently and gracefully.
“It’s all right. I’ll be a good fiancée to you until my sister comes back.”
“Don’t blame my sister—she’s just insecure. When she returns, I’ll give back to her the position of Mrs. Lu.”
“For now, I’ll have to trouble you, President Lu.”
The memory of my sister’s flight from the engagement made Lu Yanxiu’s expression turn grim, though it softened a little when he looked at me. He raised a hand and transferred thirty million to me as compensation.
“If your parents hear any news of Meng Xuening, remember to tell me.”
I nodded at him with a worried look, then turned around and deleted the location message Meng Xuening had sent me just hours earlier.
She had wanted, as she had the previous times, to use me to tell Lu Yanxiu where she was, to stage some grand cross-border lovers’ reunion.
But now I was Lu Yanxiu’s fiancée—did she really think she could make me spit back out what I had already taken?
She must be dreaming!
After Lu Yanxiu left, I returned to the Meng home.
Mom and Dad were sitting on the sofa, anxiously calling Meng Xuening.
When their eyes fell on me, they both looked as if they had something to say but held back.
“Jianxi, Ningning and Yanxiu have been childhood sweethearts and love each other. Your engagement to Yanxiu today is only a stopgap measure…”
“Ningning has a good temper and is willing to give all this back to you, but she owes you nothing.”
Meng Xuening’s mother swapped us, letting her take my place as the Meng family’s young lady for over twenty years—yet my own birth parents said she owed me nothing.
That, in itself, was a kind of favoritism.
But I only smiled faintly.
“I know. Don’t worry, Mom and Dad. Today my sister abandoned Yanxiu at the proposal scene, so the Lu family is sure to be displeased. It was for my sister’s sake that I stood in as Yanxiu’s bride.”
“I’ll look after Yanxiu’s family for my sister and explain things to them on her behalf. When she comes back, I’ll return to my own place.”
Mom and Dad visibly relaxed.
“Good child. When your sister returns, Mom and Dad will surely find you a good marriage.”
“Back then we’ll pick a family of slightly lower standing, so you can live more at ease.”
I smiled politely, then turned away.
Wait for my sister to come back?
By then I would probably already be married to Lu Yanxiu.
