Chapter 0
Three days after our divorce, my ex-husband died.
I was in the courtyard airing out my books when the news reached the Old Residence.
The messenger boy was sobbing so hard he could barely catch his breath. He told me that Lord Xie had fallen off a cliff, and they hadn’t even found all of his remains yet.
I stood dazed for a long time. I remembered the day we parted; he had handed me the divorce papers with a calm expression, offering only one parting instruction: “Cut down that Crabapple in the West Wing as soon as possible.”
At the time, I simply thought he was being spiteful.
It wasn’t until that night, when I carried a lantern to the West Wing, that things changed. Before my axe could even fall, a crack suddenly split the Fox Immortal Tablet on the offering table.
The room became so silent you could hear a pin drop.
In the next instant, I heard Xie Huaizhi’s voice coming from inside the tablet. It was low, sounding as if he had been enduring something for a very long time:
“Lin Yao, if you dare cut it down, my soul will scatter to the winds this very night.”
