Chapter 2
Once we were out of the Emergency Department, I let go of Li Kai’s arm and walked briskly toward the car.
I didn’t want to pretend anymore.
Large raindrops began to fall, hitting my body and chilling my heart.
Li Kai followed closely behind, jogging to catch up, his voice even more impatient. “Wang Xi, have you had enough?”
“After what you said back there, have you ever considered how we’re supposed to interact as colleagues in the future?”
I faced the wind, didn’t look back, and quickened my pace, angrily pulling open the car door.
Just as I was about to start the car, Li Kai snatched the keys from my hand. His face was cold, but his tone softened slightly. “Honey, you’ve already offended my colleague and embarrassed her. That’s enough.”
“You’ve thrown your tantrum. It’s not a big deal, do you really have to be like this?”
But a fire was smoldering inside me. It was clearly his fault, so why was it now me who was being dramatic and unreasonable?
From beginning to end, he had shown no regard for my feelings.
I walked around the front of the car, sat in the passenger seat, and slammed the door shut with a “bang,” fastening my seatbelt.
The wind outside had lessened, but the rain now fell in dense sheets, drumming against the windows and making me even more agitated.
Perhaps I really had misunderstood him.
After all, he was tall, handsome, mature, and had a decent job. It was only natural for a young girl to have a crush on him.
As long as he could maintain his boundaries and handle it properly…
Getting married is easy, but maintaining a marriage is hard. We all have to cherish what we have.
But his next words shattered any positive illusions I had about him.
“She’s just a kid with a pitiful background. There’s no need for you to stoop to her level.”
“She’s very innocent.”
“Everyone at the office treats her like a little sister.”
I turned my head to look at Li Kai. “Does treating her like a sister include head pats?”
“She was secretly tugging on your shirt, and the adoration in her eyes was impossible to hide.”
“Do you think I’m blind?”
Remembering their intimate exchange, the anger I had just managed to quell flared up again.
“She has a boyfriend, okay?! Can you stop with your wild, paranoid fantasies?!” Li Kai’s face changed abruptly. He slammed on the accelerator, and the car shot forward.
He drove faster and faster, completely disregarding the bad weather and poor visibility.
Suddenly, he slammed on the brakes, and my head nearly hit the dashboard.
Thank God for the seatbelt.
Before I could even react, he rolled down the window, ignoring the cold wind and rain pouring in, and started cursing, “Are you trying to get yourself killed, jaywalking like that!”
Luckily, he had braked in time, and no one was hurt, but the other person was clearly shaken.
I quickly got out of the car to check on them. “Are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?”
It was a middle-aged woman. Though she wore a raincoat, her face and legs were soaked. She quickly shook her head, then bowed apologetically. “I’m so sorry, there’s an emergency at home. I thought it would be faster this way. I really didn’t mean to jaywalk.”
With that, she got on her electric scooter and hurried away.
Back in the car, I was still shaken.
Li Kai’s face was still ashen, his anger clearly not subsided. He didn’t speak or look at me, but he drove a little slower than before.
As the sky darkened, I stared out the window, lost in thought.
What if he hadn’t braked in time? What if the woman didn’t have an emergency and decided to become a scammer? Or what if it had been a big, brawny young man…
Even if the jaywalker was entirely at fault, the consequences would have been unimaginable…
And all of this was because of his baseless, indignant rage.
A rage he was deliberately showing me.
If I continued to press him about his ambiguous behavior, it was possible that he might even crash the car in a fit of rage.
This was his way of suppressing me, of making me afraid, and successfully deflecting the issue.
Afterward, he would even have the gall to argue nonchalantly: You provoked me. Don’t you know I have road rage?
He knew me too well, so he played with my psyche perfectly.
But his selfishness and coldness astonished me and sent a cold sweat down my back.
It was as if I had never truly known this man.
For the sake of our safety on this stormy night, I could only swallow my anger, dismiss my pointed questions, and rein in all my unhappiness.
