Chapter 1
On our wedding anniversary, I prepared a lavish dinner and gifts, intending to surprise my husband, Li Kai. I never imagined… this would become the darkest experience of my life.
My name is Wang Xi, and I’m an Emergency Department doctor. For this anniversary, I went to great lengths to get a day off, but as the food grew cold, he still hadn’t returned.
No replies to my texts, no answer to my calls.
Outside the window, dark clouds gathered, and the fierce wind rattled the glass.
Worried, I dialed his number again. Just as the ringing was about to end, his voice came through with an explanation, “Don’t wait for me for dinner. You go ahead and eat.”
“Patient B0125, please proceed to CT Room 2.”
“Are you at the hospital? Are you hurt?” The familiar mechanical announcement sent a chill down my spine. “Are you at our hospital?” I blurted out.
“Yeah. Don’t come over… I…”
Before Li Kai could finish, I hung up and rushed to the hospital.
My heart pounded with anxiety on the way, my mind racing with countless terrible possibilities.
Where was he hurt? His head? His chest? Was it serious?
How did it happen?
Why didn’t he call me immediately?
As an Emergency Department doctor, ever since we got married, Li Kai would always call me first for anything, whether it was his own issue or a relative’s.
Or maybe… he got into another conflict on the road?
He has road rage. Did he hit someone and was afraid I’d criticize him, so he didn’t dare to call?
When I arrived at the CT room and saw Li Kai completely unharmed, the heavy weight in my chest finally lifted.
As long as he’s okay.
But the scene before me left me stunned.
At that moment, my husband was wiping tears from a young girl’s face, his voice gentle, his eyes doting. He kept comforting her, “It’s good that you’re not hurt.”
After speaking, he gently ruffled the hair on the back of her head.
“What are you two doing?” I stormed forward, my anger flaring.
A flash of panic crossed Li Kai’s face, but he quickly composed himself, his tone laced with annoyance. “Didn’t I tell you not to come? You don’t reply to my texts, you don’t answer my calls, what’s wrong with you?”
The weather was terrible today, with gale-force winds. I almost got into a car accident on my way here.
He offered no comfort, no explanation, only blame.
The air was thick with a sense of tense confrontation. His anger made my nose tingle, and a wave of grievance washed over me.
It was as if I was the one in the wrong.
The girl beside him stood up timidly, trying her best to explain, “Ma’am, I’m so sorry, please don’t misunderstand. The wind was too strong today, and an advertising sign hit me right as I left the office. Brother Li happened to see it and insisted on bringing me to the hospital…”
Only then did I notice the small bruise on her forehead.
Yet her face was pale, and she looked terrified, as if I were deliberately giving her a hard time.
The girl before me was young, pretty, and pitiful. She was Li Kai’s colleague.
Her name was… Su Yuluo, I think.
As Su Yuluo finished speaking, her voice cracked with a sob. She cast a cautious glance at Li Kai. “Brother Li, please explain to your wife. Don’t let an outsider like me affect your relationship.”
I noticed that as Su Yuluo said this, she subtly tugged on the corner of Li Kai’s shirt.
But Li Kai’s face was taut, his brow furrowed in irritation. “What’s there to explain? There’s nothing going on between us.”
“Wang Xi, do you have to be so unreasonable?” he finished, glaring at me.
He used my full name.
He only ever used my full name when he was truly angry. It seemed he was genuinely furious.
Was I really mistaken?
Or was he deliberately using anger to cover up his guilt at being caught?
My heart felt heavy and tight, as if a large stone were pressing down on it.
This was the angriest he had ever been with me since we met, and it was all for an insignificant outsider.
Their intimate gestures and subtle actions were magnified in my mind.
Li Kai’s inexplicable rage forced me to calm down, making me increasingly certain that his strange behavior today was not without reason.
But I had no concrete proof. If I clung to this one ambiguous moment, I would only put myself in a more passive position. And this Su Yuluo was clearly not easy to deal with.
After some thought, I suppressed the frustration in my heart, took the initiative to link my arm with Li Kai’s, and smiled faintly at Su Yuluo. “I trust my husband’s character.”
“On the other hand, I hope you don’t get the wrong idea.”
“My husband has one weakness: he’s too kind-hearted and doesn’t know how to say no.”
Without giving Li Kai a chance to react, I pulled him away.
In the instant we left, I clearly saw the innocent and pitiful look in Su Yuluo’s eyes transform into one of resentment.
Once the seed of doubt is planted, it will sprout and grow on its own.
And I needed time to investigate, to verify.
