Chapter 19: Yan Zhixia Can't Get Enough Either
As Zhang Cheng drove away from Lin Wanshu’s villa, his phone buzzed. The name Yan Zhixia made him pause. He’d thought their last meeting would be the end of it.
“Handsome, want to meet?” she asked sweetly.
“Didn’t I say not to contact me again?” His fingers stroked the wheel, his resistance weaker than his words. Yan had a beauty unlike Su Qing’s, tempting despite the trouble she might bring.
“But Su isn’t back today, is she? I chatted with her. She said tomorrow, so don’t lie.” Yan sounded aggrieved. “Am I not as pretty? Is my figure worse? Or did you never like me?”
Zhang swallowed. If he were really a rich heir, perhaps he could resist. As a driver earning six thousand a month, he’d never dreamed of being with women like Su and Yan. His refusal had been a little game, and she had seen through it.
“Where are you?”
“I’m nearly finished work. Will you pick me up?”
Half an hour later he waited outside her office, smoking. He messaged Yan that he’d arrived and was waiting downstairs. Yan emerged in a cream silk blouse and black skirt. She hurried up, put her arms around his neck and kissed him. Passing workers looked on; several men stared enviously. Embarrassed but unable to refuse her enthusiasm, Zhang kissed her for nearly a minute.
As he opened the car door for her, he noticed a woman in a work skirt filming them beside a flower bed. When she saw him look, she put away her phone and rushed inside.
“Someone was recording. Could that cause you trouble?” he asked.
Yan’s expression flickered. “It’s fine. I have plenty of admirers, but no boyfriend. I don’t mind.”
Zhang thought no more of it. If the video became public, people might envy a poor driver for attracting such a beautiful woman. If Yan didn’t care, neither did he.
At her apartment they spent the night together. Afterward Yan lay in his arms. “Break up with Su Qing. Let me be your girlfriend. I’ll love you so much, cook and wash for you, and treat you better than she does.”
“Impossible. You’re beautiful and capable, but I love Su more. We’re nearly ready to marry.” He spoke firmly, though he feared Yan might persist or discover he was a driver, not a rich heir.
Her smile stiffened. “What’s so good about Su? I earn over thirty thousand a month and can help with your connections. We’d have a better life together.” She argued for a long time, then gave up when he wouldn’t budge.
The next morning, shortly after he left, she called again. Her voice was icy. “If you won’t break up with Su Qing, I’ll send her yesterday’s video and show her how you betrayed her!”
Zhang realized the woman filming must have been arranged by Yan. Both angry and amused, he said evenly, “Do what you want.”
“You think I won’t? If I can’t have you, neither can she.” She hung up.
Zhang laughed. “Since when did a poor driver become so desirable that two beautiful women would fight over him, even threaten him with a video?” He tossed the phone onto the passenger seat.
At three that afternoon he drove the Mercedes E500 to the airport to collect Zhou Mingyuan and Su Qing. Zhou emerged tired and hollow-eyed, evidently unsuccessful in Shanghai. Su, in a pale blue dress, looked travel-worn but lovely. She caught Zhang’s eye and winked, apparently telling him Zhou hadn’t succeeded.
