Chapter 4
I was pregnant.
Counting the days, it must have been from that one night, the second time, when we got lost in the moment and didn’t use protection.
Gu Qingye was due back in two months.
If Fu Tingshen found out about this child, he would surely make me get an abortion for Gu Qingye’s sake.
Truthfully, without this child, I could live very well with the money I had.
But I was an orphan.
For as long as I could remember, I’d had no family.
Looking at the pregnancy test in my hand, I instinctively touched my belly.
I made up my mind to leave.
With Fu Tingshen’s status in Shanghai, if I ran away secretly, I definitely couldn’t stay in the city.
After half a month of analysis, I finally chose to settle in C-City, a place far from Shanghai.
Before I left, I personally cooked a table full of dishes for Fu Tingshen.
It was a skill I had learned back at the orphanage.
After I got with Fu Tingshen, he never let me do these things again.
“Did you make all this today?” Fu Tingshen glanced at the dishes, which were clearly different from usual, then looked at me.
I nodded and sat down beside him.
“Auntie Lin wasn’t feeling well today, so I gave her a couple of days off to rest.” I lied through my teeth.
Then I picked up a piece of fish with my chopsticks and placed it in his bowl. “It’s been two years, and you’ve never tried my cooking. Have a taste.”
He didn’t suspect anything and picked up his chopsticks to eat the fish.
The meal was just like any other.
After dinner, he wanted me to join him in the study.
I didn’t come to this place often, though sometimes he would make requests in the study…
This was the last time.
With that thought, I followed him into the room.
Just as I was wondering where to begin, he took out a band-aid from a first-aid kit on the side.
I stood there, stunned, watching him lower his head and carefully apply the band-aid to the cut on my finger.
“Don’t do this kind of thing in the future,” he said, his voice flat.
His tone couldn’t be described as caring.
Looking at the top of his head, I asked him on an impulse, “Tingshen, do you like children?”
He froze.
Then he let go of my hand. “I won’t be having children.”
I knew it.
“Why do you ask?”
I smiled. “I was just thinking about Auntie Lin’s grandson. Just a casual question.”
The night passed with unusual calm.
Fu Tingshen didn’t touch me.
I stared at his face, unable to fall asleep for a long time.
Tomorrow was the Fu family banquet, and Fu Tingshen wouldn’t be coming here for the next half a month.
It was the perfect time to escape.
As I had in previous years, I gave the maids a week off, left a letter behind, and took my things, leaving Shanghai that very night.
Standing at the boarding gate, I looked at the largest Fu Corporation billboard in the airport and waved.
“Fu Tingshen, farewell forever.”
