Chapter 14
I knew Fu Tingshen never fought a battle he wasn’t prepared for.
He had called the police before he came.
But the police were still a step too late.
Fu Tingshen caught Chu Weiyi, who had been thrown by one of the men, and held him tightly, but he was stabbed by the other man.
Hearing the police sirens, the two injured men quickly fled in panic.
I scrambled toward Fu Tingshen without a second thought. As soon as I reached him, I saw that the back of his chest was already soaked with blood.
Looking at my blood-covered hands, I cried and screamed, “Someone! Help! Someone, please!”
He had said he didn’t like children.
It seemed he wasn’t incapable of lying after all.
He sighed deeply, covering Chu Weiyi’s eyes with one hand while raising the other to gently wipe away my tears.
“Don’t cry, I’m fine.”
He was not fine.
Lin Zizhou said the wound had grazed his heart; he had been a hair’s breadth away from not making it.
In the hospital corridor, I finally met Gu Qingye.
She was even more beautiful than she was on the news.
“You’re Chu Ning?” she asked, stopping in front of me.
I looked up at her.
She curved her lips into a slight smile and sat down beside me. “Fu Tingshen was right, your eyes are indeed beautiful.”
I was a bit surprised.
“Fu Tingshen told you about me?” Who would voluntarily tell their wife about a former girlfriend?
Oh.
Not exactly a girlfriend.
Gu Qingye raised an eyebrow. “Not much. He hardly ever talks to anyone.”
That was true.
“But he’s different when he talks about you.”
She smiled.
“He had a hard time finding you these past few years. I’ve never seen him so serious about anything other than work. I used to hear that he wasn’t interested in women, but later I found out he’s not interested in any woman but you.”
Gu Qingye spoke as if she were telling an amusing story, finding it more interesting as she went on. “A while ago, he suddenly said he wanted to come here to develop a tourism zone. A small, obscure town… why would he need to personally oversee it?”
“So it was because you were here.” She tilted her head to look at me.
I was at a loss. “I’m sorry.”
Even though she didn’t sound accusatory when she said these things, it made me feel incredibly guilty.
She seemed surprised by my sudden apology. “Sorry for what?”
Sorry for what.
I didn’t know either.
It felt as if I had stolen something that belonged to someone else.
“Aren’t you two married?” I asked her.
She froze for a moment, then burst out laughing. “Who told you that? Did Fu Tingshen tell you?”
He hadn’t told me that.
But they had been engaged for two years.
Logically, they should have gotten married after the engagement.
“I would never marry him. He’s so cold, like a block of ice.” She laughed and playfully tickled my chin with her finger. “Only a soft, warm beauty like you could melt him.”
I was completely frozen.
This was not how the story I knew was supposed to go.
“But it’s true we haven’t broken off the engagement yet,” she continued. “But don’t worry, as soon as I get the remaining 10% of the Gu Corporation’s shares, we’ll break it off immediately.”
So she was a career woman through and through.
“No rush, no rush,” I said with a dry laugh.
I was still trying to process this sudden plot twist.
“By the way, those two men have been caught. The police said the one million you transferred will be returned to you.”
Finally, she shared this good news with a smile.
