Ten Rules to Bind Her Heart - Chapter 58
Xia Zhiyao hurried after him.
Shen Yu stood six foot two. Years spent moving through jungles and training grounds had given him long, steady strides. Xia Zhiyao practically had to jog to keep pace with his leisurely walk.
He seemed to notice the quick, pattering footsteps behind him. The tall figure ahead paused slightly, and then, without comment, his pace slowed.
The space was frighteningly vast.
“Mr. Shen…”
“Can you possibly use all these supplies?”
Shen Yu slowed and glanced at her with a faint smile. “You think there are a lot?”
The low, teasing question made Xia Zhiyao’s eyes widen and stopped her breath for a second.
She stared in shock at the apparently limitless subterranean space.
**
Xia Zhiyao had never encountered this sort of field. She did not even possess the knowledge required to imagine it.
Shen Yu looked into the deep darkness, absolute certainty underlying his words.
“It is beyond anything you can imagine.”
Xia Zhiyao nodded without fully understanding.
Her world had been too simple. She could not yet grasp an immense system built from power and rules.
Then her thoughts took another uncontrolled turn toward something stranger. After several seconds of silence, she could not resist asking,
“Will… will these supplies expire?”
The air instantly froze.
Shen Yu stopped completely.
He slowly turned toward the little woman whose expression was sincerely inquisitive. She looked as though she were standing in a supermarket wondering what happened to milk near its expiration date.
In Shen Yu’s thirty-two years of fighting his way through storms, he had heard threats, pleas, flattery, and the most vicious curses in the world.
But this was undoubtedly the most absurd and preposterous question he had ever heard—and somehow, it was a little endearing.
Looking into her clear, bright eyes, Shen Yu felt as though a feather brushed his hardened heart and softened one small corner.
He truly could not help himself. A visible smile appeared on his normally glacial face.
The little thing certainly possessed an imagination.
He turned toward the girl who barely reached his chest.
She wore the dark green uniform that marked her as his, her hair neatly combed and her round eyes filled with unmistakably innocent foolishness.
His stare made Xia Zhiyao uneasy. Thinking she had said something wrong, she hurriedly stammered,
“Mr. Shen… did I say something wrong?”
“What I meant was… there are so many… I was worried you might have too much inventory, and that keeping it too long would be bad…”
“No… I mean, might the collections become damp? Might the supplies expire? I absolutely didn’t mean no one wanted the collections stored here…”
The more she explained, the more tangled her words became. She waved her hands anxiously, cheeks turning crimson and eyes warming with tears, afraid she had offended the immensely powerful man before her.
Shen Yu appeared ready to say something, but in the end, she exasperated a laugh from him.
“Don’t worry,” he finally said.
“They’ll spend less time here than you have.”
“Let’s go.”
He had no interest in explaining the complex operational logic. Turning, he resumed walking.
The innocent little puppy trailing him probably could not comprehend the deeper meaning of his words.
The air carried the scent of various supplies. To Shen Yu, it was the smell of money and power, the foundation and order he had personally created.
But to the small shadow behind him, the smell was unfamiliar and heavy. After breathing it for too long, she began to feel stifled.
Xia Zhiyao followed, breathing hard. After only two more steps, she instinctively stopped.
