chapter 5
I gradually came to understand the kind of happiness Cheng Song spoke of.
The first time Xu Sixian saw me, although his clothes were clean, they were visibly worn, and his shoes too-he must have worn them for many years.
When I gave him new clothes, he wore them.
I disliked that he ate only steamed buns and pickled vegetables every day, so I arranged for someone to deliver meals to him daily. As I wished, his complexion improved noticeably, and he finally no longer looked so frail.
Seeing how hard he worked to care for his grandmother every day, I simply moved her into a Private Ward and arranged for dedicated care.
Xu Sixian did not refuse, but each time he would thank me sincerely.
He kept a precise record of every expense: “I will pay you back, Miss He.”
“I don’t want money.” My tone was casual, and then, thinking of something, I spoke with authority, “Since I’m sponsoring you, I only sponsor the best. Can you be first in your department this semester?”
It was a question, but also a command.
Xu Sixian was slightly taken aback, then nodded: “Alright.”
He then carefully asked what I liked.
He was probably planning to prepare a return gift.
I felt it was unnecessary. I almost wanted to ask what he could possibly afford to give, but seeing him standing in the sunlight, clean and fresh, my mood lifted.
He was already a refined and elegant young man, and now, dressed well, he was even more graceful, reminding me of that saying: a gentleman as beautiful as jade.
Is this what it means to plant a tree? No wonder Cheng Song likes it.
It truly is delightful.
“I like plants,” I said, resting my chin on my hand. “No flowers-they’re too easy to kill.”
Xu Sixian: “…”
He agreed, and really gave me a Succulent he had cultivated himself.
This was completely different from Cheng Song.
The gifts I gave Cheng Song would disappear after he accepted them.
Cheng Song never thanked me; his attitude was always one of entitlement.
I never cared before, but now I know-receiving a response feels like this.
It’s like tossing a coin into water and hearing the splash.
It’s a pleasant sound.
So the recipient of my gifts changed from Cheng Song to Xu Sixian.
For this, I even bought a Small Greenhouse and filled it with lush potted plants.
All of them were gifts from Xu Sixian, and soon it became a sea of green.
