Taboo Mage - Chapter 176 - Going Home
I couldn’t hide my joy as I placed the talisman paper inscribed with the incantation on the life amulet. The hot amulet nearly burned my palm. I tossed the amulet onto the coffee table and watched it lie quietly there, finally letting out a sigh of relief.
Having placed Li Zhiqiang’s soul into the amulet, the next step was to take it back for Jue Chi to exorcise.
This matter had finally reached a resolution.
The female homeowner, who had been sitting on the sofa, saw what was happening in her room and had no desire to stay any longer. Before we even left, she started pushing her boyfriend to sell the house.
Of course, the man didn’t want to; he had just spent money buying a high-end apartment. They began arguing, and Jue Chi and I exchanged a glance before quietly slipping out the door.
Such family disputes were beyond our responsibility. If we stayed longer, they might even blame us and demand compensation.
Once we exited the community, I told the Village Chief and Suzhen to head back, as there was no point in me following them to the village anymore. It would be better to go directly to the train station and take care of my own matters.
The Village Chief didn’t seem too concerned about my departure. My only worry was about what would happen to his son if both Jue Chi and I left.
I left the Village Chief with Jue Chi’s phone number and informed him that after we performed the deliverance for Li Zhiqiang’s soul, we would return the life amulet to him. At that time, they just needed to wear it by night.
After seeing off the Village Chief and Suzhen, Jue Chi and I headed for the train station.
On the way, Jue Chi recounted what had happened during my absence. It turned out that after I left the hospital that day, I hadn’t gone home, prompting Lin Huan and Chi Rui to ask Du Jun about my whereabouts.
Du Jun had come to the hospital, his clothes mostly torn, claiming he had encountered robbers on the road and that I had sacrificed myself to save him by driving off the bridge.
Everyone was moved by my selfless act and sought out Jue Chi, hoping to retrieve my soul and ensure I would be reborn well.
However, one person was exceptionally angry, nearly causing havoc in the hospital-Zhou Qifang.
I felt a tightness in my chest. If Du Jun were standing in front of me right now, I would want nothing more than to shove his head straight into a toilet!
Saving people? Heroic sacrifice? I’d spit water right in his face!
I can’t believe I nearly got killed by Zhou Qifang back when I went to Thailand for him, only to end up saving such an ingrate!
After buying train tickets for two hours later, we realized the journey would take over three hours. Once we had our tickets, we looked for a place to grab a bite to eat.
Jue Chi had been unusually quiet, and I thought he was plotting how to get back at Du Jun. Suddenly, the person sitting across from me lifted his head and said, “Actually, I knew you wouldn’t have that kind of spirit.”
I was taken aback for a moment, nearly dropping my chopsticks onto his face.
Since I hadn’t informed Lin Huan and the others in advance, it was already past ten o’clock at night when we got off the train. Jue Chi and I took a taxi back to the shop.
The shop was dark, and I couldn’t tell what was going on. Normally, at this hour, the lights should be on, and Lin Huan would be gossiping with Chi Rui.
Jue Chi and I exchanged glances, then walked up to the door and pushed it open.
The living room was eerily quiet. I instinctively suspected that while I was away, Lin Huan might have sold my house behind my back.
However, as soon as I pushed the door open, a shadow darted past in the darkness. I didn’t even have a chance to dodge before I felt a sharp pain in my chest-I had been kicked hard.
Jue Chi, right behind me, pulled me aside and engaged in a struggle with the attacker.
I had seen Jue Chi in action before, but this was my first time witnessing him fight a person instead of a Resentful Spirit.
While Jue Chi held the assailant at bay, I pressed my hand against my chest and made my way to the wall, hitting the light switch. I finally saw that the person fighting with Jue Chi was a man in his thirties.
I was certain I hadn’t seen him before and couldn’t remember when I might have provoked such a person.
Could it be Du Jun?
The thought flickered through my mind, but I quickly shook it off. No matter how influential Du Jun was as a star in the entertainment industry, he was just a guy with a bit of money and connections.
Most importantly, I didn’t think the secrets I knew were enough to make him want to kill me at any cost.
As the lights came on, I noticed the man glanced at me quickly before grabbing a nearby stool and throwing it at Jue Chi. Taking advantage of Jue Chi’s evasive maneuver, the man sprinted toward the door.
He was incredibly fast, disappearing into the night in the blink of an eye.
Ignoring everything else, I first checked on Jue Chi to see if he had been injured. Once I confirmed he was fine, I dashed up to the bedroom on the second floor.
I pushed open the door to Lin Huan’s room, only to find it completely empty. I then opened the door to Chi Rui and Zhou Qifang’s room, and it was also devoid of anyone.
A wave of confusion washed over me. Had so many things happened while I was away over the last few days?
Jue Chi was sitting on the sofa, his head down as if lost in thought. I was about to ask him what was on his mind when, suddenly, a commotion erupted at the door.
I hurried to get a closer look, and just as I stepped onto the staircase, I spotted Lin Huan and the others returning, all wearing big smiles.
“Boss?” Upon seeing me, Lin Huan’s eyes widened in surprise. It looked like fear overtook his joy; perhaps he still thought I might be a ghost!
I gritted my teeth and replied, “I’m not dead!”
Once we were in the room, Lin Huan told me that after receiving my call that day, he had intentionally approached Du Jun in hopes of gathering some intel, but he hadn’t managed to find out anything.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. With that lovestruck look on his face, it was a miracle he could even speak around Du Jun, let alone expect him to go undercover!
Chi Rui surveyed the mess around the room, frowning as he asked me what had happened.
I recounted the events of just moments ago. Zhou Qifang went upstairs, clearly uninterested in hearing my story. I rolled my eyes again, waiting for Chi Rui and the others to respond.
“Boss, do you think it was Du Jun?” Lin Huan was the first to speak up, but as usual, his thoughts were the least reliable.
Chi Rui didn’t say much, only looking up at Zhou Qifang as he walked upstairs. After a long pause, he said, “I suspect it’s someone from Beijing.”
As soon as Chi Rui finished speaking, goosebumps instantly prickled my arms.
