Chapter 92
Chapter 92
Smack-
Jiang Yourong slammed her palm down on the table, her eyes flashing with an almost blinding light. “The Old Jiang Family finally has an heir!”
Jiang Baichuan: “…”
“It’s still far too early.” He poured himself a cup of tea and sipped it slowly.
Jiang Yourong understood at once and stabbed him right in the heart. “Oh, so she hasn’t agreed to be with you.”
Jiang Baichuan glanced at her. “The time simply hasn’t come yet.”
Jiang Yourong spat out coldly, “Useless.”
Jiang Baichuan’s eyes narrowed. “Watch your tone.”
Jiang Yourong looked smug. “You’re the one asking me for help right now!”
Jiang Baichuan: “…”
Silence couldn’t solve the problem. Jiang Yourong got up and moved from across the table to sit beside him. “Is there anything I can help with? Does she like you?”
Then she couldn’t resist complaining, “Did you not show enough sincerity or something? With a face like yours, that shouldn’t be possible. If you still can’t win her over, then Grandpa was right. You really are a blockhead.”
“Ah, the Old Jiang Family…”
“Shut up.” Jiang Baichuan snapped, pressing his fingers to his brow as a headache set in. “She just broke up with someone.”
Jiang Yourong froze. “With who?”
Jiang Baichuan met her puzzled gaze with a chilly look.
Jiang Yourong understood instantly and forced out a smile. “Good thing. Good thing. Looks like your promotion from male homewrecker went pretty smoothly. It’s fine. We’ll keep working hard.”
Jiang Baichuan: “…”
There was no way to continue this conversation. His gaze darkened, and he began to suspect that coming to Jiang Yourong in the first place had been a mistake.
Xie Qiyan’s younger sister was a top-tier wingman on standby at all times.
His younger sister was a lunatic ready to land a fatal blow on him anytime, anywhere.
Sensing her brother’s mood, Jiang Yourong gave a light cough, reined in her mouth, and tugged at his sleeve. “Are you mad? Honestly, I figured out ages ago that you liked Yun Li.”
Jiang Baichuan glanced at her with question marks practically floating over his head, too lazy to respond.
“That birthday banquet. You invited Xia Wanzhi and Yun Li under your own name.” Jiang Yourong bumped his shoulder with hers and smiled. “Your eyes were on Yun Li the entire time. I could tell right then that you were interested in her.”
“And it wasn’t just me. Everyone could tell. We were all waiting to see if you’d bring her home for New Year’s this year.” Jiang Yourong sighed softly. “But you moved way too slowly, so a while ago, I couldn’t help inviting that Little Princess from the Xia Family over to scout out the enemy situation.”
At that, Jiang Baichuan paused slightly, and his expression softened. “What did you find out?”
Jiang Yourong coughed lightly. “I found out that if the Old Jiang Family wants an heir, it might still take quite a few years…”
Jiang Baichuan rubbed his face, then reached out and smacked her on the head. “Stop copying Grandpa when you talk.”
Old Master Jiang was ninety this year.
When people got old, they always loved repeating the same line: “Before I’m buried, I want to see Xiaochuan get married.”
But Jiang Baichuan couldn’t just find some random person to marry because Old Master kept nagging him.
Not until he met Yun Li.
The idea of starting a family had begun gathering force, ready to burst free.
Everyone around him was pairing off and living blissfully. Even that bastard Xie Qiyan had been flaunting his love every day after getting together with Xia Wanzhi.
It would be a lie to say he wasn’t envious.
He wanted to be with the person he liked too.
He wanted to be with Yun Li.
“So why did you come to me? Don’t tell me you came all this way just to admit you have feelings for her.” Jiang Yourong finally got back to the point.
Jiang Baichuan pondered for a moment. “Lend me my two nieces.”
The words had barely left his mouth when Rong Yu popped his head out. “Not a chance!”
Jiang Yourong shot him a reproachful glare, then agreed and said to Jiang Baichuan earnestly, “Fine. If there’s anything else you need help with, tell me. When it’s time to make a move, make a move. You’re not getting any younger. Hurry up and settle your life plans, got it?”
Rong Yu, the daughter-obsessed father, was not very pleased and frowned. “Honey…”
“He can take care of the kids. We’ll go enjoy some couple time.” Jiang Yourong had already planned everything.
The gloom cleared at once, and Rong Yu beamed. He smiled slightly at Jiang Baichuan. “Thanks for your hard work, Uncle.”
Jiang Baichuan: “…”
–
The next day was Friday. Early in the morning, Jiang Baichuan went to the kindergarten to pick up his two nieces after school. The two children looked almost identical. Their brows and eyes resembled Jiang Yourong’s, while everything else looked just like that old bastard Rong Yu.
Zhaozhao and Mumu had only just started kindergarten, but the two little things had inherited Jiang Yourong’s sunny disposition. They adapted quickly, and on top of that, they were born social butterflies. The moment they spotted Jiang Baichuan from a distance, they charged over one after the other, calling, “Uncle, carry me-”
Jiang Baichuan scooped one into each arm and carried them to the car, then took them to Yun Li’s flower shop.
At this hour, the setting sun painted half the sky red. Yun Li crouched slightly and looked at the two adorable little dumplings with their tiny pigtails.
The flower shop faced west, and the last light of sunset streamed in, falling perfectly over Yun Li.
Even the strands of her hair seemed to glow.
She looked at Zhaozhao and Mumu. Jiang Baichuan looked at her.
“Which one of you is Zhaozhao, and which one is Mumu?” The two children weren’t shy around strangers at all. Yun Li took turns holding them for a while, then led them by the hand, one on each side, to sit at a table inside the shop.
The two children seemed to have been instructed by Jiang Yourong beforehand. They looked at Jiang Baichuan with bright grins. “Uncle, you say it.”
Jiang Baichuan: “…”
This was difficult.
These two little things Jiang Yourong had given birth to looked exactly the same.
The exact same tiny pigtails, the exact same clothes and shoes, the exact same voices, faces, and height…
He had no idea which was which.
But with Yun Li watching, he took a blind stab at it like a cat swatting at a mouse, pointing to the one on the left as the older sister and the one on the right as the younger. “Zhaozhao. Mumu.”
Zhaozhao and Mumu pouted. “Wrong, wrong, wrong again!”
Zhaozhao planted her hands on her hips. “Uncle is so dumb!”
Mumu stuck out her lip. “Auntie, you have to do something about him!”
Yun Li’s eyes widened in shock at that single word, and she waved her hands over and over. “No, no, no, that’s not-I’m not your auntie…”
Even Jiang Baichuan, who was always calm, froze for a good moment.
What on earth had Jiang Yourong taught them…
He explained to Yun Li, “I didn’t teach them that…”
Zhaozhao continued with her fearless social-butterfly speech. “But we want you to be our auntie. Auntie, don’t you want to? Our uncle is really nice.”
Mumu nodded along. “Mm-hmm! We like you!”
Yun Li: “…”
Jiang Baichuan: “…”
The two children quickly made themselves at home. Girls seemed naturally fond of flowers, and after Yun Li gave each of them two stems, they refused to leave. Once they had played themselves tired, they sat in the chairs and began to doze off.
Seeing this, Yun Li tugged at Jiang Baichuan. “Take them home to sleep first.”
Jiang Baichuan tilted his wrist and glanced at the time. “Perfect. It’s dinnertime.”
Yun Li caught his look and asked in confusion, “What?”
Jiang Baichuan picked up one of the little dumplings and raised a brow slightly. “Has Boss’s Wife forgotten she still owes me two meals?”
Before Yun Li could respond, he made the decision for her. “Let’s make it tonight. At my place.”
Yun Li froze.
Jiang Baichuan explained, “Jiang Yourong and her husband went off to travel around the world. For the next half month, I have to take care of these two kids.”
“Huh?” Yun Li’s mind went blank.
“I’m a grown man taking care of two little girls. The responsibility is a bit beyond me.” Jiang Baichuan coaxed her along unhurriedly.
“So?” Yun Li ventured.
“So, seeing as they like you so much, I’ll have to trouble Boss’s Wife to help me out.” Jiang Baichuan finally let his fox tail show.
Yun Li managed to squeeze out a dry sentence. “Help you take care of the kids?”
Jiang Baichuan liked how quick she was. “Boss’s Wife is so smart.”
Yun Li: “…”
The shop wasn’t very busy today anyway, so Yun Li simply tidied up and prepared to close. Seeing Jiang Baichuan still waiting off to the side while holding Zhaozhao, she grew a little flustered. After finishing up, she picked up Mumu as well. “Let’s go.”
It was already dark outside.
The two of them walked side by side, each holding a child. From behind, they looked exactly like a family.
After settling Zhaozhao and Mumu into their car seats, Yun Li sat in the passenger seat. Once she buckled her seat belt, she finally couldn’t help spelling it out. “Jiang Baichuan, this isn’t fair.”
He had even dragged children into it. She didn’t know whether he was at the end of his rope and had no other choice, or whether he was smugly assuming she couldn’t see through his schemes.
How old was he already? And he was the dignified president of Jiang Corporation, no less. How could he be this childish?
Jiang Baichuan started the car and cracked the window open a little, his voice tinged with pleasure. “As long as you took the bait.”
Yun Li: “…”
