Chapter 11
Last month, the water pipe in her rented apartment burst, thoroughly soaking the ceiling of the downstairs neighbor’s home.
She called me crying in the middle of the night for help, and I contacted Duan Qinghong to arrange for legal assistance to negotiate with the landlord.
Thinking about how difficult it is for her to be alone out there, I decided to bring her directly to my home to stay temporarily.
When she first arrived, she was timid and overly cautious.
After some time together, she has integrated well into this household.
At this moment, she is curled up on the sofa, her head resting on my neck, rubbing her fingers, her voice as soft as a mosquito:
“Aunt Lin, if I say… I want to resign, would you be angry?”
I sighed, the feeling of suffocation in my chest growing stronger, yet I still managed to respond to her discomfort:
“No, but may I ask why?”
“I’m getting married.” Her expression gave me a sense of anticipation, but her tone was indifferent.
“Is it the kind of marriage you mentioned before, where you were forced to exchange betrothal gifts?” I couldn’t help but frown and ask her.
“No, no, we genuinely like each other.”
I breathed a sigh of relief, “Then I wish you well.”
Unable to contain her joy, she hugged me, “Really? You really won’t be angry?”
Because she doesn’t want to work anymore due to getting married.
Not angry, just a bit disappointed.
“Yes, I am supporting you, but I have no right to plan your life.”
My mother once said that sunk costs should not be involved in major decisions.
Investing in a person is the same.
