Chapter 13
A sharp arrow pierced through his chest.
Naturally, it was no minor wound.
In fact, it was extremely dangerous at this moment.
Old Mrs. Pei hurried over, and when she saw Pei Huai covered in blood, she was so anxious that her vision went black, yet she still didn’t forget to scold me for not staying in my place and always thinking about running outside.
I had no heart to argue with her.
But when I looked up, I saw a woman following behind her.
Zhao Yao.
Her face was pale, her eyes red, and she kept wiping away tears.
She was even more worried about Pei Huai’s safety than I, his legitimate wife.
She noticed my gaze and instinctively shrank her shoulders, as if I were a raging beast.
Mrs. Pei noticed this and hurriedly stepped in front of her, afraid I might harm her in the slightest.
This was a treatment I had never received in all my years of marriage.
Perhaps it was my saintly heart acting up, but I truly had no intention of making things difficult for her.
Women in this world already have it hard enough-why make it harder for each other?
By the time Pei Huai was settled, dawn was breaking.
I only felt a slight cramp in my lower abdomen, probably from exhaustion, so I drank a bowl of medicine to protect the pregnancy and planned to sleep for a while.
But I didn’t expect Old Mrs. Pei to be so impatient.
She couldn’t wait for Pei Huai to wake up before confronting me.
“This is Huai’er’s cousin. I plan to make her a concubine for Pei Huai.”
I lowered my eyes, unconsciously clutching the Book of Songs.
Seeing that I didn’t respond, she said impatiently, “The two have been close for years and even have a son together. When you had no children, Huai’er worried you’d overthink. Now that you have a child and your position as the main wife is secure, we can’t let the Marquis’s eldest son remain outside forever, and Yaoyao can’t go on without a proper title-”
Only then did I understand why she was in such a hurry.
She knew that once Pei Huai woke up, he would never allow Zhao Yao to enter the household, so she forced me to agree first. That way, when Zhao Yao brought her son into the manor, Pei Huai would hopefully bear a grudge against me, and she herself would avoid resentment between mother and son.
Three birds with one stone.
What a clever scheme.
I set down the Book of Songs, my tone very light.
“Alright.”
Old Mrs. Pei was stunned, and even Zhao Yao, who had remained silent, looked up at me, not expecting me to agree so readily.
After all, I had monopolized Pei Huai for so many years.
I let out a soft laugh, my gaze clear.
“I agree. You may choose a date for her to enter the household.”
