Chapter 10
Pei Huai returned to the residence when it was already dark.
He had been like this these past few days; most likely, that woman was clinging to him and unwilling to let him go.
Otherwise, the scent of a woman on him wouldn’t be growing stronger and stronger.
He first summoned Zhier to ask about my meals and expenses today. Zhier was young and couldn’t hide anything; her attitude was extremely cold. He frowned in displeasure but said nothing and let her leave.
I watched, but only felt a deep ache in my heart.
Look at him-when a servant offends him like this, he still holds back his temper, only because she is my dowry maid and he doesn’t want to hurt my dignity.
Late at night, he carefully applied scented balm for me, his tone gentle: “Niaoniao, you’ve seemed unhappy lately. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to Mount Xiang for a walk.”
I lowered my eyes to look at him. The candlelight fell on his face, casting shadows, but his eyes were exceptionally clear.
Just like countless evenings over the years.
I leaned into his arms, eyes half-closed.
He gently patted my back, telling me about the day as if coaxing me.
His voice was low and soft.
Sometimes, he would make me laugh, until I slowly drifted off to sleep.
He would gently kiss my cheek and say, I love you.
At the time, I only thought such days were ordinary.
But that kind of ordinary can never return.
I wanted to smile, but felt unbearably tired, so tired that the heart which had fluttered for him thousands of times finally slowed down.
“No need. The blooming season has passed, and the apricot blossoms have withered. Going would be pointless.”
At that moment, the long-dormant system suddenly spoke up-
“Hello, Host. Task completion detected. You may exit at any time.”
“What will happen to this body after I exit?”
“The original body will die.”
At these words, my fingertips trembled lightly.
Pei Huai seemed to sense something and held me tightly in his arms.
“Don’t leave me, Niaoniao. I love you.”
I had always been softhearted toward Pei Huai, but this time, I wanted to see-
If I died-
Would Pei Huai regret his betrayal and deception today?
