My Wife Is Adorable - Chapter 4
Three days later, when school let out, my second brother was waiting at the gate. He leaned against his car door, looking cold.
After a few seconds’ hesitation, I went over and dutifully greeted him. “Second Brother.”
He took off his sunglasses. “Little tattletale. I only took one box of cake, and your husband called my boss directly to tell him I should watch my conduct.”
I didn’t know how to explain, so I apologized. “I’m sorry.”
He gave a small snort, his expression easing. “Who wants an apology? Get in. Come have barbecue with me.”
I retreated half a step. “No, Qin Zhan’s waiting at home—”
“Spare me.” He opened the door. “With the terrorist groups causing that much trouble on the border, you think he can stay home?”
I closed my mouth. Qin Zhan had left in the middle of the night two days ago. I didn’t know when he’d return.
“What are you standing there for?”
I paused, then said gently, “Go without me, Second Brother. I don’t really feel like eating.”
“What do you feel like?”
I shook my head. “Nothing much. I’ll just have something at home.”
He frowned. “What’s wrong with you? Dieting? With that little body of yours—”
“I’m not,” I interrupted. “My digestion’s been bad lately. Greasy food makes me nauseous.”
He studied me for several seconds. “How long has this been going on?”
My brother was a doctor. I thought carefully and answered honestly. “About a week.”
“Had it checked at a hospital?”
I shook my head. “I bought some digestive tablets.”
He gave me a speechless look. “Get in.”
He took me to an upscale private hospital, where he worked in the dental department. He led me straight to obstetrics and gynecology and had a colleague order some tests.
Half an hour later, I had the results.
Six weeks pregnant.
Beside me, he said dryly, “You really don’t worry about a thing, do you? There’s already a fetal pole and a heartbeat.”
Pinching the corner of the paper, I whispered through a tangle of emotions, “Qin Zhan always… uses protection. And he said…”
“And what? It’s one thin layer. You expect it to be foolproof?”
I closed my mouth.
He took the results and slipped them into a document envelope. “If I remember right, your compatibility with him is only 30%. The odds of conceiving naturally were low to begin with, and you were using protection on top of that. Get what I’m saying? This child came looking specifically for you two.”
He put the envelope back in my hands. “Eat properly. Drink properly. When Qin Zhan gets back, give him a nice surprise.”
A surprise?
I lowered my eyes with a bitter little smile.
He had told me he didn’t want me to have a child.
The next day was Saturday. At ten in the morning, I sat in a café waiting for someone.
Just before bed the night before, Jiang Jingshu had sent me a message telling me to meet her there at ten.
She arrived at ten twenty-seven.
In a red dress, curls spilling over her shoulders, she looked like a brilliant rose.
She sat opposite me, put down her bag, and lounged against the sofa.
I greeted her and called a server over to take our order.
After the server left, she said abruptly, “You’re prettier than you used to be.”
I looked up. Before I could speak, she gave a laugh.
“Qin Zhan must be treating you well.”
I nodded. “Yes. He’s very good to me.”
Her smile faded a little. She changed the subject. “I saw him at the Military Region General Hospital a few days ago.”
“Yes. He went for a checkup.”
She was silent for two seconds. “His leg’s completely healed?”
I nodded. “It healed a year ago.”
She gave a short, humorless laugh. “Looks like I came back too late.”
The server brought our coffee. Jingshu took a sip and raised her eyes.
“I’ll be direct. I want us to switch our identities back. All you need to do is cooperate. And move out of his house before he gets back from the border.”
[Our girl is so clever! Perfect matches have a six-month cooling-off period if they want to dissolve the marriage. But switch their identities back, and the person married to him automatically becomes the female lead. The supporting character couldn’t stay even if she wanted to.]
[Exactly! Get her out, move our girl in. When he comes home from his mission, the first person he’ll see is his perfect match. Imagine how happy he’ll be!]
I took a deep breath and looked up. “I won’t.”
Her face darkened. “Say that again.”
I looked away, my defense coming out weakly. “You… you’ve never built a relationship.”
Her lips curled in mockery. “A relationship? With a perfect match, who needs that? Men think with what’s between their legs. His body won’t be able to resist me. That’s enough.”
I dug my nails into my palm, forcing myself to stay calm, and met her eyes.
“You chose to leave, Sister. I don’t owe you—”
A sharp crack rang out.
The slap knocked my head sideways.
My mind went blank. Pain brought the old fear rushing back, pressing me down until I couldn’t raise my head.
Jingshu sneered. “You don’t owe me? If your mother hadn’t brought you to our door to make a scene while my mother was pregnant, she wouldn’t have gone into premature labor! She wouldn’t have died giving birth! My baby brother wouldn’t have died from being born too early!
“Jiang Youman, you’ll owe me for the rest of your life!”
Her furious accusations echoed in my ears.
I lowered my eyes to the blurred tabletop.
After a long time, I forced out the words. “All right. I’ll do it.”
